“Sure. So, what’s different about today?”

“Syd left early, and it threw me off. We’d been riding together, but today she just left without me.”

“Maybe she’s overwhelmed.”

I don’t doubt that. I just wish I could make things easier for her. That’s why I hired someone to help around the house. One less thing for her. Plus, if she moves with me, there would already be someone in place to do these things for us. God, I wanted to shower Syd with perks, and yet all I did was a hire maid. Everything else I came up with screamed pathetic and trying too hard. Especially buying her a new car.

But she doesn’t even want the maid, and I have no idea what I’m doing. Clearly, spending my money isn’t how I’m going to change her mind.

“Do you think I’m overwhelming her?”

I don’t know why I ask it. Maybe to have someone reassure me that I’m not and that I’m just overthinking.

“You could be, but I’d say it’s more your situation. You two are still trying to navigate this new . . . relationship.”

Well, that wasn’t what I wanted to hear.

“Relationship? We’re just friends.”

God, I even hate the way it sounds. I’m no idiot. Two weeks of living together and I know that something more between us would be great, but is it right?

Especially if she doesn’t move with me. God, I’m obsessing over this, but seriously, what do I do if she says no? Stay here? Where would I work?

So, yeah, dating is the last thing that should be on my mind.

His fingers are typing away on his computer, but they stop, and he looks up.

“You want more, don’t you?”

Jesus, am I just radiating my thoughts or what?

“Are we talking about this?” I ask him. I’m still unsure of how much my friends want to hear when it comes to Syd and me. Winston especially, since he and Kass, my ex, are now dating, even if she’s back in Manhattan while he finishes his last semester here in Wyoming before moving to be with her after graduation.

“Yeah, we are, if you want to. You never talk about it. You probably should.”

“It’s not weird for you? I don’t want to make it weird for you.”

“Is it weird for you that I’m dating Kass?”

“No,” I say so quickly that it shocks us both. “Kass and you were meant for each other. I swear, I’m happy that you and she are happy.”

He nods slowly.

“So, you’re crushing on Sydney?”

“Is it weird? We barely know each other and have been living together for only a couple of weeks, and before that we only had one class together. Our friendship was new when everything happened, and it seems odd now.”

“It’s not weird. That’s how these things start. You’ve just been out of the game for so long that you forgot.”

“Yeah, I guess. Would dating her be wrong? I mean, it won’t mess anything up, will it?”

“That depends. Do you think she would want to date you too?”

“I have no clue. Maybe?”

“So, you haven’t talked about it.”

“Not really.”
