“Oh, hey.” I sit up taller. “I didn’t know you were home. Where is your car?”

“In the garage.”

I probably would have noticed that had I parked there, but I was too focused on calling my father.

“Are you okay?”

I nod. “Yeah. Family, am I right?”

She gives me a soft smile and sits next to me.

Once she’s settled into my side, I shift a little to place my hand on her belly.

“How active are we today?”

“Pretty active. Especially once I drank a Wild Cherry Pepsi.”

Our girl kicks against my hand just then.

“Soccer player, all the way.”

“Yeah, with my bladder.”

I crack up, and so does Syd.

“Do you want to talk about that phone call?”

“Not really.”

She nods slowly. “Well, I’m here if you want to.”

She doesn’t move right away, and I’m glad, because even though I said I didn’t want to talk about it, I should. With her.

“My dad just doesn’t understand. He’s old school, and I’m trying to explain to him that just because things don’t go as planned doesn’t mean they are wrong. He’ll come around.”

I’m not sure who I want to believe it more. Her or me.

“Well,” she says and runs a hand through my hair. “If anyone can convince him of what is right, it’s you. I know you can do it.”

I connect my gaze with hers. “You really are amazing. Do you know that?”

“So, I hear.”

“Oh, right. Shit. I forgot about that. Sorry you had to hear me yell, I just—”

She cuts me off with a kiss.

“Thank you.”

She curls herself back under my arms and turns on the TV.

I may not have it all figured out, but I know I got one thing right.

Syd.

Now I just need to find a way to keep her once and for all.
