“Hold on.” I put my hands up and step back. “What happens to your job?”
He shrugs. “I’m not really sure.”
“But the volunteering and donations . . .”
“Can all be done from here. Every town needs both of those. I’ll just be happier doing this here because I’ve got you.”
If people were alarmed by the water works before, they better watch out.
“Oh my gosh, I love it. I love it so much. Did I mention that?”
“You might have.” His smile is wider than ever.
On instinct, I rise to my toes and kiss him on the mouth, wrapping my arms around him and holding on tight.
This is happening. It’s all really happening.
Ahhh!
CHAPTER SIXTEEN
Sydney
I feel like I’m in a different universe.
My living room is transformed from the modern decor that normally fills it to purple and pink unicorn everything. I never thought of myself much as a theme person, but when June asked what I wanted, the wordunicornjust blurted out of me.
Of course, Mark didn’t argue. He never argues because he’s perfect. Too perfect.
I can’t believe he wants to stay here. I probably cried at least two more times the day he told me.
I’m so happy, it hurts.
I let out a deep breath and step into the kitchen, where I smell gingerbread cookies.
I grab one while June has her back to me and take a seat.
“Oh, no. No, no, no. I can’t have the mother-to-be frowning on what should be the most memorable day of her life thus far.”
“Ha. Thus far?”
“Yeah. Life should only get better, with every day better than the last. Hence, thus far.”
“Okay, I see your point.” I pick at one of the veggie trays in front of me.
“So, what’s on your mind?”
“Just . . . life.”
“You and Mark and how you’re serious now.”
“Pretty much.”
“Well then, you should be smiling so much your face cramps.”
“Trust me. I’ve done my fair share of that.”
But even though I’ve smiled nonstop lately, Mark hasn’t.
