I get out slowly, and as soon as I unlock the door and step inside, large, gold letter balloons fill the living room and there are flowers on every table and rose petals scattered around the carpet. The question stands out right away.

Marry Me?

Oh. My. God.

I move through the room slowly, pausing when I get to the kitchen table. There is a picture with a custom-made frame. There isn’t a picture inside, but the frame reads: The Day She Said Yes.

A smile stretches across my face as I reach for the frame, but I pause. Is that broken glass? Hold on. Those aren’t scattered rose petals—it’s a broken vase and roses that were tossed through the room.

What’s going on? Where is Mark?

I spin around, ready to shout his name and search the house for him, but he’s standing behind me.

“Oh.” I cover my heart with my hand. “Are you okay? I saw the shattered vase and thought something bad happened to you.”

The green eyes that usually sparkle when they see me go dark.

“Something did happen.”

Oh no.

“What?” I lay my fingers on his arm. He jerks back like I burned him. “What happened?” I’m almost afraid to ask.

“I know your plan. I know all of it.”

Whoa, has he been drinking?

“What plan are we talking about?”

“The one you’ve been up to this entire time. The one you thought you were going to see through, the one where you trick me.”

I have no idea what he’s talking about.

“I think maybe you’ve had one too many drinks.”

He shakes his head. “I’ve only had two beers since I read your email.”

“My email?” I reach for my computer.

“No need to look it up. I printed it.”

He holds up a piece of paper and then slams it on the table.

I pick it up and read quickly.

How did he get this? I mean, it’s not filled out, but how . . . oh.

“You went through my email?”

His hands fly up and he tugs at his hair. “You’re upset I went through your things?”

“Yes, I am.” I set the papers back on the table and cross my arms. “Why would you do that?”

“That’s your answer? That’s your answer to what I found?”

“What’s my answer supposed to be?” I snap.

“I don’t know. To defend yourself. To say it’s a misunderstanding. I don’t know, but not just be upset that I caught you.”
