“Oh, it’s not a problem. What’s up?”
“Well, Winston and Tripp invited me to go to Denver this weekend, and with you so close to delivering, I thought I’d check to see how you felt.”
“You should go. I mean, you heard the doctor this morning. I haven’t even started to dilate. I’d say you’re in the clear for a couple of days at least.”
“You sure?”
“Yes, very. Go and have fun. Have all the fun.”
“All right. Well. I’ll have my phone, obviously, so just call or text me if you need anything.”
“I will, but I’m sure we will all be fine. I’ll talk to you soon.”
“Okay, bye.”
I hang up and look up to see Hero standing in front of me with his arms crossed.
“Did you stand there the entire time?”
“Yes.”
“Thanks for the privacy,” I say, laughing it off and walking into his house.
The living room is a large open space that merges into the kitchen.
I go straight for the cookies on the table and take a seat.
“In a moment, I’ll give you a tour, but first, completely serious, tell me what’s up with Mark.”
“He’s going out of town.”
“Sydney.”
I let out a long sigh and nod. “I want to be with him, but I messed up my chance, and I don’t think he will give me another one.”
“Not possible. There is always another chance.”
“I’m not so sure there is in this case.”
“I know what you need to do.”
“You do?”
“Yep.” He slides me another cookie. “You need to do the grand gesture.”
I laugh and bite into the sugar delight.
“You laugh, but it works every time.”
“In your books, yeah, because you write it into the story so that it works.”
“In real life too.”
I glance around the room as if I’m looking for someone. “Where is the love of your life to prove you right?”
“Ha. Ha.”
“I’m serious.”
