“So am I. Mark had this whole grand plan for you, Sydney, and you tore it to shreds.”
I pick at some of the frosting on my cookie. “You don’t have to remind me.”
“Well, it kind of sounds like I do. You want him back, right?”
I nod.
“You’ll do anything?”
“Pretty much.”
“Then do the grand gesture.”
“I don’t even know what I’d do.”
Hero pops open a kitchen drawer and pulls out a notebook and pen. “Let’s start making ideas.”
“Do you just keep notebooks everywhere?”
“You never know when inspiration will strike. Now, let’s get started.”
“Who would have thought that you’d be helping me win back a man you hated.”
“I never hated him. I hated the position he put you in. There is a difference.”
“Still.”
“Yes, still. We have a list to make.”
“All right.” I lean onto my elbows. “Let’s do this.”
For the next half hour, we make a list of all Mark’s favorite things, and instead of helping Hero unpack, we load into my car to get all the supplies and head back to Mark’s and my house.
Hero unloads everything when we get there while I make us a snack in the kitchen.
“I still can’t believe you can rent a helium machine,” I tell him as I munch on some watermelon.
“It’s genius. Especially with all these letters. Are you sure this is what you want to do?”
“Yep. He had this whole thing planned out for me, so now I’m going to do it for him.”
“I still think,” Hero pauses and shakes his head. “I think it’s amazing you’re going to propose to him. He will be shocked.”
Hero disappears into the living room, so I speak louder as I follow him.
“Yes, he will be, but I think I can pull this off. The little scavenger hunt through the house until he gets to his room and sees the balloons will help. Plus, I . . . oh my god.”
I stop and look down at the liquid between my feet and coating my leggings.
“Oh shit. Shit. Shit!”
“What?” Hero rushes into the kitchen.
“My water broke.”
“I see that. What should I do? Where do I go? Who do I call? Do we grab anything?”
“I know all of this, and yes, yes, but calm down. It’s not like I’m going to just pop this kid out right here, right now.”
