“Aren’t we too old to do this?” I ask.
“How far are you willing to go to write this book? Please, Beck.”
Like before, her pleading tugs at my heart. I’ve seen Calla smile more times in the last thirty minutes than she has since she moved in with me.
I nod. “Fine.”
We both get out. Calla comes around the back of my car, crouched down. She grabs my hand and leads me through cars until we can see her brother’s table through the window.
Sure enough, Greer sits with Simon and Grey.
Calla starts clawing at me with excitement.
“How cute is this?” She grins.
I take another look through the window at my smiling friend. Simon deserves to be happy. They could be here as friends, but either way, I can’t remember the last time Simon was out with a woman who wasn’t his mother or sister. And with Grey there too. This could be something, but it could also be nothing. However, Calla is beaming, and I’m not going to ruin that.
“This turned out to be a great night,” she says, pushing me to go back to the car.
“Yeah?”
“Yes, and I’m with you.” She pushes me. “Stop smiling at me like that. I know, I know. Don’t make it a thing.”
“I didn’t say anything.”
“You looked at me.”
“How did I look at you?”
“Like this is a thing.”
“What’s that look like?”
“It looks like you right now, giving me a goofy grin, and me feeling… just get in the car. I’m hungry.”
I do as I’m told, not pressing the subject more, because she’s right. Tonight was good, and it needs to end well.
She pops open the top to the chips and salsa as I pull out of the parking lot.
A little progress is still progress, and I might have changed her mind on me a little tonight.
There might be a chance for us after all.
CHAPTER NINETEEN
CALLA
Beck is… Beck is…
This man is just like the guys he writes about in his books. He’s more sweetheart with just the right amount of irresistible than I ever expected him to be.
Holy hell.
“We have a problem,” I say as soon as I step through the door of Willa’s studio. “A big problem.”
And I’m not just talking about what I saw in his boxer briefs this morning.
Boxer briefs! I swear that man did that on purpose.
