“You should owe me forty for the view we have now.” Willa laughs. “She’s cooking him dinner, and they’ve been fooling around for two maybe three weeks now.”
“Good thing I only bet twenty. I didn’t realize she was going to fall this hard.”
“You two do know I can hear you, right?”
“Yep.”
“Yes.”
“Just checking.” I put the tray in the oven, then check the second oven. Yes, there are two. When I said Beck had the house of my dreams, I wasn’t lying.
“I think it’s cute,” Willa says.
“Of course you do. You’re happy and in love. From my view, my only two friends are dropping like flies into happy bliss.”
Greer grabs her phone while Willa and I share a look.
“Has Matt still not returned your calls?” I ask. Greer has been on one bad date after the next. I can see how she would be frustrated right now. She mentioned taking a break from guys a while back, I think this breakup might be the one that puts that plan in motion.
“No, he hasn’t. And you know what? It’s not even that I liked him. It’s the fact that he ghosted me. Why do people do that? Why can’t they just grow a pair and say, hey, I don’t think this is working for me?”
“Because boys suck,” I say.
“Who sucks?” Simon says, walking into the kitchen.
“Simon,” I point to the door, “there is a doorbell and this tall, square piece of wood that you knock on before walking into someone’s house.”
He smiles, winks at Willa and Greer, and takes a cookie. He gives Greer a quick glance. It was so fast, I almost missed it.
Huh? I know I asked Greer about dinner that night, but maybe I need to hear both sides.
“We have some things to finish up at the studio anyway. Call us later,” Willa says.
“Have a good night!” Greer cheers from the door before they’re gone.
“Smells good in here,” my brother says, moving around the kitchen and flicking the oven light on to see what’s inside.
We may not be twins, but I swear we can always sense when the other one needs us, and his ears must have been burning.
“Hey, I’m glad you’re here,” I say and wave my hand for him to sit down. “Why were you and Greer having dinner together the other night?”
“You saw us?” He looks panicked.
I nod. I knew it. He likes her.
He sighs. “Grey wants to join a traveling football team next summer. Thinks he needs to change his eating habits.”
I narrow my gaze at him.
“So you took him out for Mexican? Instead of just meeting at their office?”
He grabs another cookie before I can move the plate from his reach. “We were just sitting down to go over him possibly becoming a client of hers. You know, since she’s a nutritionist and all.”
“He’s only twelve, Simon.”
“Thirteen by next summer, and who am I to tell him no, you can’t eat healthy?”
“True. That’s all it was?”
