“Yep.”
I’m not so sure I believe him, but who am I kidding? Simon has no plans to settle down. He loved once, and in his mind, it won’t happen again.
“There is something I need to talk to you about.”
His voice is serious, and it makes me pause with the door half closed.
“Is Grey okay?”
“Grey is fine.”
“Are Mom and Dad okay?”
“Everyone is fine.”
“Then why do you sound like you’re here to deliver bad news?”
I study him cautiously and wait for him to say something. He takes his time shrugging off his coat and running a hand through his hair, his gaze lingering around the room for a moment.
“Out with it, Simon.”
“Is Beck here?”
I open my mouth to snap at him, but then close it and take a different approach. Does he know?
“No. He’s making a pit stop at the store for milk on his way home. What’s up?”
The longest sigh I’ve ever heard leaves my brother’s lips, and I want to smack him.
“Simon.” I all but stomp my foot.
“Alright, alright. I’m just thinking of how to say this. Give me a second.”
I move the cooled cookies to a plate to make room for the ones in the oven.
“Beck asked me how I would feel if the two of you were dating.”
“He did?” I spin around with a grin I can’t contain.
He nods. “Yep.”
“What did you say?”
Please tell me you said you’d be fine. Please be okay with it.I’d date Beck either way, but knowing my brother is okay with it makes it all the better.
“I said to take it slow.”
My smile drops.
“I didn’t mean it like that,” my brother says softly.
“There’s only one way you can say it, Simon.”
“Well,” he groans. “I can see that you’re taking it the wrong way.”
I point at him with the spatula in my hand. “Then tell me how you want me to take it.”
He takes a beat before he talks.
