“Please just… fuck, I wanted to tell you, but there was never a good time.”
“Never a good time to be honest? Ha. Wow. Every moment we spend together is a great moment to be honest with me.”
“Like you were honest with me?” His voice is laced with sarcasm. “Clearly, we don’t tell each other everything.”
Oh, the nerve.
“Do not turn this on me because you fucked up.”
His eyes close again, and he lets out a breath.
“You’re right. I screwed up. Let’s just,” he waves toward the stairs, “let’s just go get some air and talk about this.”
I nod. “You should go get some air. I’d like to be alone anyway. I need to think.”
“Calla, I don’t want to end this conversation like this. I don’t want to leave this unresolved, okay? I’m in—”
“Well, I want you to not use our personal life as the basis of your next bestseller. Now, please, let me have some space.”
He stumbles back but nods.
“Fine, but we are not going to bed fighting. Do you hear me? I will be back, and we will fix this.”
I shake my head and turn toward my room.
“I’m going to Tobias’s. Call me when you want me to come back. If not, I’ll be home by dinner.”
I don’t have a reply as I close my door.
The tears break instantly, and my vision falls blurry as I send a text to the writers’ girls group—yep, I named us because I thought… it doesn’t matter anymore. I know I told Beck I want to be alone, but it’s not really true. I just need to not be around him.
The longer I stood there, the more I wanted to forgive him, but the fact of the matter is, he used me to write a book. Okay, yeah, maybe it didn’t start that way, but he kept doing it even after we started a real relationship, and he never told me.
Fuck.
I curl up on my bed once Greer, Nora, and Natalie reply they’re on the way over.
I kept a secret from him, too, but my secret didn’t involve using our lives and our feelings to make a buck.
I don’t know what to think.
My shoulders shake as I cry.
Beck was supposed to be the one guy who would never hurt me.
And he just did.
CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE
BECK
Before I back out of the driveway, I shoot Tobias a quick text to let him know I’m headed his way.
What the hell is wrong with me?
How did I let this happen?
I’m a smart man, a wise one. Why the hell didn’t I just tell her? She was absolutely right when she said that every moment together was the perfect moment to tell her.
