And fuck, she can’t have kids?

All I wanted to do was kiss her and hug her when she said those words.

Telling me clearly took its toll on her, and she was obviously struggling to share her situation. Then she found my book, and fuck. How can I be there for her when I’m causing her pain?

Actually, fuck this.

I pause at the stop sign.

I need to go back. I need to fight for her. I need to show her how wrong I was and how sorry I am and that kids or not, she’s the one I want.

She’s probably right.

But there’s an unknown number on the screen.

“It’s not him,” I say and let out the breath I’d been holding.

“Answer it anyway—maybe that’s who keeps calling.”

I nod. “Hello?”

“Hi, is this Calla Robertson?”

I scoff at the name that rolls off the woman’s lips.

“Yeah, sure.”

“Calla, this is Officer Flores. Your husband has been in an accident and was just checked into Wind Valley Medical Center. He was conscious just long enough to provide us with your name and number. The second car hit his driver side, and his head was...”
