“Thank you for the ride and for dinner,” Jenna said thinking she’d have to remind Lacey of her manners when she went in.

“No problem, darlin’.Same time tomorrow morning?”Roadkill asked turning to look at her.

“Yeah, that would be great. Thanks so much for helping with this.I hope we can get the car fixed soon so you don’t have to bother with us for too long.”

“It’s no bother.Tell me something though.”

“What?”she asked.

“Who do you lean on?”

“Lean on?”Jenna frowned.

“Yeah, who do you talk to when things get hard?Who do you vent to when you need to let off steam?”

“No one.”

“No one?”

“Nope.I used to have friends, but we grew up.Some moved away, some got married. We drifted apart.”She shrugged. Not saying that when she’d fought for custody of her sister, the few friends she’d had left kind of fell away.

“Call me,” he said.

Jenna shook her head. She couldn’t have heard him right. No way any man would want to listen to her tell him about all the troubles on her mind.

“You can’t be serious.”

“I am.”He reached over and covered her hand with his.“I want to be there for you.I want to help you carry your burden, no matter what it is.I’ve got big shoulders, darlin’, let me carry some of the weight of your worries for you.”

She tilted her head as she watched him.Was this more of what Elizabeth was telling her? That he never took women to the clubhouse and he was looking for more than just to help out some stranger?

“Are you sure?I’ve got a lot of worries.Though, not so many as a few days ago.”

“I wouldn’t have said it if I wasn’t sure, darlin’.You got something on your mind, call or text.Lacey’s getting on your last nerve?I’ll listen.Worried about bills?About something going on with her school?Family issues?I don’t care.Lay it on me.”

This was too good to be true.

The door opened and Lacey stood in the open doorway, hands on her hips as she watched them, as if she was a mother waiting on her teenager to come in from a date.Jenna rolled her eyes.

“I better go in.I’ll see you in the morning.”She released her seat belt and opened her door.

“I’ll be here.”

Jenna slid out of the seat, bending her legs to cushion the impact as her feet hit the ground.

“And I mean it about reaching out.Call or text, any time,” he said before she closed the door.

Not knowing what to say she just nodded, then closed the door and headed inside.

“How was your day?”she asked Lacey once they were both inside and she’d heard the gravel crunch as Roadkill left.

“Good.I liked going to the shop after school. Can I do that again tomorrow?”

“That’s the plan.Probably every day after school, at least for a while.I noticed you got through your homework pretty quickly.I take it Joker was able to help better than I can?”

Lacey’s eyes went wide.

“Hell yeah!He can explain things, so I just get it.He showed me how, explained it then I was able to do the rest.He helped me a couple of times, but I didn’t need him for most of my problems.”
