I look at him.

He lifts a hand. “Before you say it, yes, I know. It shouldn’t have touched correction behavior. It was meant to clean up the display timing for the gala sequence.”

“There's no such thing as a patch that shouldn’t have touched behavior if behavior changed.”

Sara, to her credit, doesn’t waste time defending anyone. “The issue now is containment. We need to know whether this is a surface conflict or a structural one.”

I stand and move closer to the screen.

The model rotates under my hand as I pull up the event tree. Predictive layer. Fault detection. Adaptive response branch. Correction engine. The architecture's familiar enough that I can usually see weak points before other people have fully describedthem. I’ve spent too many years building systems by assuming failure is always more creative than optimism allows.

I zoom in on the response chain. “Run the flagged sequence.”

One of the engineers does.

The simulation populates. Inputs stream. Turbulence spikes. One subsystem hesitates, then the correction logic overcompensates by a fraction of a second, enough to create a duplicate intervention request.

There.

Small. Fast. Easy to miss if you trust the surface display.

“Again,” I say.

They rerun it.

Same behavior. Not identical timing, but the same architectural stumble. I brace one hand against the table and watch the data rather than the visualization.

Jeffrey is the first to say it. “It’s stacking.”

“Yes.”

The younger engineer leans forward. “We thought the prediction engine was reading phantom instability.”

“It isn’t,” I say.

The room goes quiet because once you say that, the next implication arrives quickly.

Sara folds her arms. “Then what's it reading?”

I point to the branching interval. “A timing mismatch between the display integration layer and the correction acknowledgment loop.”

The first engineer frowns. “That shouldn’t be possible.”

“No,” I say. “It shouldn’t. Which is why someone failed to isolate the visual layer properly before binding it to the live response model.”

He goes pale enough to be educational.

I continue before panic can become counterproductive. “The system isn’t seeing a false fault. It’s reading delayedconfirmation as unresolved instability and initiating a second corrective branch.”

Jeffrey’s expression sharpens. “So the architecture thinks the first move didn’t take.”

“Yes.”

Sara steps closer to the screen. “Can it be stripped out cleanly?”

“Not the way it’s currently nested.”

I pull up the patch history.
