I zoom in on the failover sequence and walk him through the issue. The predictive layer is flagging instability correctly. The adaptive response modeling is also functioning. The problem emerges at the handoff point, when the system transitions from passive correction support to active stabilization in scenarios with compounding control interference. The logic is sound. The behavior isn't.
Bee studies the code map for perhaps ten seconds before he says, “You’re carrying too much inherited elegance.”
I look at him. “That isn't a useful phrase.”
“It is if you know what I mean.”
“I do. I dislike that I do.”
He taps the screen. “You’re preserving the old transition assumptions because the architecture looks cleaner that way. But the system isn’t failing at the handoff. It’s hesitating because the correction confidence score is trying to remain graceful across conflicting inputs.”
Celeste blinks once. “I understood some of those words.”
Bee points to the screen again. “It wants to look intelligent before it commits.”
“That isn’t how code works,” she says.
“That's exactly how bad code works,” he replies.
He looks back at me. “Strip the confidence smoothing from the secondary handoff and force a harder threshold when theinterference pattern repeats twice inside the same stabilization window.”
I consider that.
It’s obvious the moment he says it. Not simple, exactly, but obvious in the infuriating way certain solutions only become after someone else names them.
“It’ll make the transition more aggressive,” I say.
“It should be more aggressive,” Bee replies. “You built this thing to intervene before pilots lose the window. Stop asking it to be elegant when decisiveness is the point.”
I hold his gaze for a beat, then nod once. “That may work.”
“Itwillwork.”
“You don’t know that.”
He smiles, and I see the old version of him: brilliant, intolerable, usually right.
“I know you. You only bring me things that are ninety percent solved.”
That, annoyingly, isn't entirely inaccurate.
I set the phone down. “There’s also a visual instability in the live demo interface.”
“Then stop trying to make the audience watch the thinking.” He reaches for my phone without asking, adjusts the sequence view, and hands it back. “Collapse the intermediate logic display. Let them see the threat recognition, the correction trigger, and the outcome. Nobody in that room needs to watch the system narrate its own childhood.”
I exhale once through my nose.
Celeste studies Bee with a mixture of admiration and exasperation. “Do you always talk like this when it’s technical?”
“He’s actually being restrained,” I say.
“Thank you,” Bee replies. “That’s generous.”
“It wasn’t praise.”
Lunch arrives before he can pretend otherwise.
