I extend a hand. The servant scrambles forward, surrenders the tray, and immediately flees the oppressive weight of the room.

I break the crimson seal. The parchment within reeks of the faint, cloying scent of night-blooming lotus. It is an invitation to the grand banquet at the Khuzuth assembly halls in Vhoig. A gathering of the highest bloodlines, supposedly to honor the turning of the season.

It is a trap. Kryven sits upon the organizing committee. He intends to gather the elite of the Undercity in one room and force my hand, publicly demanding the human’s execution to humiliate House Thosti before the neutral lords.

The shadows in the far corner of my study detach from the stone.

Tharion places a hand on the hilt of his longblade, but I raise two fingers, halting him. The shadow solidifies into the skeletal, pale-eyed form of a whisperer—a proxy bound to the will of Patriarch Varynth. The creature does not breathe, manifesting the collective, ancient authority of my bloodline.

"The Patriarch sees the board, Zhetrin." The proxy's words scrape the air like dry leaves over stone. "He knows of the assembly. He commands you to leave the surface filth to the hounds. If you attend the banquet with the human, you elevate livestock to the high table. It will be viewed as a declaration of war against our traditions. Dispose of her, or face the wrath of your own house."

The proxy waits for my obedience. The Khuzuth are bound by hierarchy, ruled by the absolute decrees of the patriarchs. To defy Varynth is to invite the fracturing of my own lineage.

I fold the black invitation between my long fingers, crushing the stiff vellum.

"Tell the Patriarch that my traditions are built on dominance, not cowardice."

I flex my hand. A surge of invisible, concussive pressure snaps across the room, striking the whisperer in the chest. The proxy dissolves back into a formless shadow, banished from my walls by the sheer, crushing force of my will.

Tharion stares at the empty corner, my defiance settling over his shoulders.

"Summon the steward."

Maelis arrives moments later, her posture rigid, her dark eyes entirely unreadable. She stands beside the captain, awaiting my directive.

"Commission the master weavers in the lower tier. I require formal Khuzuth attire. Deep indigo silk, threaded with Thosti silver. And summon the estate cobbler to fashion proper footwear. It must be tailored to fit the human."

Maelis blinks, a rare crack in her pristine composure. "My lord? You intend to dress a surface-dweller in the crest of the noble caste?"

"I intend to bring her to the assembly."

Tharion exhales a harsh, ragged breath. "Lord Zhetrin, if you walk her into that hall, there is no turning back. The neutrality of the other houses will vanish. This level of visibility will make her a permanent target. Every assassin in Vhoig will hunt her for the bounty."

I rise, my mass blotting out the sputtering alchemy lamps. The shadows of the study bend to accommodate my frame. "A target hidden in the dark is easily shot, Captain. A target standing fully illuminated requires the archer to look me in the eye when they draw the bow. Let Kryven try."

I dismiss them both with a sweep of my hand.

An hour later, I walk the quiet length of the eastern corridor. The ironwood door to her suite yields to my push. I breach the room, carrying the large, velvet-wrapped box myself.

Megan stands near the open drapes, bathed in the weak, pale glow filtering down from the surface.

She turns as I cross the threshold. Her amber gaze strikes me, a physical impact against my breastplate. The air between us thickens, charged and volatile. My mass eclipses the double doors, while her fragile frame barely occupies the weak light, yet the friction of her presence entirely dominates the room.

I set the velvet box upon the solid oak table.

"The High Council convenes tonight for a formal gathering. Lord Kryven has orchestrated the assembly. He intends to use the neutral houses to force my submission."

Megan steps closer, her leather slippers silent against the stone. She looks at the box, then tilts her head back to meet my face. "And the Patriarch?"

"Varynth expects me to leave you behind to be butchered in the alleys, restoring the honor of the bloodline."

She does not flinch at the mention of her own slaughter. She simply reaches out, her small fingers resting against the lid of the velvet box. "What is this?"

"Armor." I step closer, eliminating the space until I catch the faint scent of lavender clinging to her hair. "If you remain in this room, you stay hidden. The estate guards will protect you. But if you open that box and put on the silk, you mark yourself as an extension of my house. You step into a viper's pit where every word is a blade, and every noble in the room will seek to tear you apart."

I watch the rapid, brilliant calculations turning behind her eyes. She understands the stakes. She knows the Khuzuth will view her as an insult, a filthy thing dragged from the mud to mock their ancient laws.

I offer her the safety of the shadows. I offer her the unseen survival she fought for in the Lowtowns.
