But that wouldn’t be very romantic, not that I excel at romance. But for Sunday I will try at least, and with a muffled groan, I pull away and whisper, “Hold on tight, darlin’. We’re riding fast today.”
* * *
I meant what I said, and as we leave the town behind, the road opens up with no other vehicles to hinder us.
I push my Harley to the extreme, allowing her to do what she does best, and as the wind whips around us, Sunday clings on tight behind me.
I almost close my eyes because this memory will sit with me for a very long time. My bike, my woman, and the ride of my life, with another one soon to come.
I love this life. I love her, but she will never hear those words. I hate myself for that.
I push away the problem and focus on the day, and as we pull off the road and follow a trail, the bike bumps over the road, the dust flying around us.
It will be worth it though, and I can’t wait to see Sunday’s face when we border on the edge of paradise.
I finally come to a stop, and as I cut the engine, I tear off my helmet and hang it on the handlebars. Sunday slides off behindme and does the same and as she pulls the band from her hair, the sunlight gleams on the highlights.
Her face is flushed, her breathing heavy, and the desire hanging heavy in her eyes causes my breath to hitch.
“Fuck, darlin’.”
I shake my head and she smiles.
“What’s eating you?”
“I can see why Adam was tempted.”
“Asshole.”
She glances around her.
“What is this place?”
“Stone Valley.”
I pocket the keys and grasp her hand.
“It’s a ridge on the edge of a canyon. The river spills down the rocks and creates several waterfalls. We will set up camp on the second one to the top.”
She peers into the distance and gasps. “This place is amazing.”
“You better believe it. Nobody comes here either. It’s ours for the day.”
“How do you know?”
“I’ve never seen a soul all the time I’ve been coming here, which is a lot.”
“I can see why.”
She cocks her pretty head to one side.
“But you haven’t been here with me, and it’s been months.”
“Haven’t needed to.”
I say no more, and she hangs her head, chewing on her lip.
She gets my meaning. This is my healing place. Sunday, as it happens, is also one of them, and now I have brought her here to heal my heart from her.
