Drix let my hand go and glanced at me.

“You want to talk or you want me to get rid of him?”

“I…” I paused and cleared my throat.

“You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do, Yo.”

“I know. I know. I’ll just… I’ll talk to him but can you stay close?”

“Yeah. I can do that.” Drix whipped into the spot beside my car. “Give me a second, a’ight?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Good.” Drix hopped out of the car and I rolled my window down a crack while he walked around to meet my father.

“What’s up?” He nudged his head toward my dad.

“Hey, Drix. I was, uh, just hoping I could talk to my daughter.”

“Yeah. She’s open to it but tread lightly, a’ight. We’re coming off of a good night but I’m not against ruining everybody’s day. Don’t disrespect my wife, instruct her to do shit, or try to pressure her into doing anything she doesn’t want to do and don’t comment on our marriage.”

“Okay.”

“Okay,” Drix repeated.

He walked over to my door, pulled it open, and offered a hand to help me out. I adjusted my shirt and cleared my throat.

“Hey.”

“Hey.” He shifted on his feet. “I was hoping we could talk… about everything.”

“Sure. Come on.” I nudged my head toward the building and both he and Drix fell in line beside me.

I scanned us inside and my father whistled as we walked toward the elevators.

“Nice place.”

“Thank you.”

We stood in the elevator in silence, and when we stepped off, Steven was waiting with a smile on his face and a coffee and chai in hand.

“I saw you coming up on the camera,” he explained.

“Thank you.”

He offered me the chai and Drix the coffee while we stepped off.

“Would you like anything?” he asked my father.

“No thank you.”

“Okay.”

Drix addressed him. “But, uh, Steven…Take a thirty.”

“Right now?”

“Yeah. I want your desk.”
