I still owed her two ass whoopings and planned on collecting them, no matter how long it took. She’d been missing on social media after it had come out that she’d lied about Drix being the father of her baby and the actual father came out talking about how crazy she was and how she refused to let him see their child or spend time with them.

It was a mess but at least we weren’t part of it anymore

Drix had been vindicated and I’d learned to just ignore social media and how fickle everyone was.

I tapped Charm’s shoulder and nudged my head toward Monica.

She glanced over and shook her head immediately.

“What’s the move?” She giggled.

“Just two quick hits. I promise.”

“You’re ridiculous.” She laughed but shrugged. “Come on.”

We unlinked our arms and looked both ways before jogging across the street with no crosswalk.

By the time Monica and her girls looked back, it was too late. I bopped her upside the head as soon as I was close enough. I swung on her three good times before deciding I was over it and she wasn’t worth the energy if she wasn’t going to at least fight back. It had been proven that she didn’t have hands and wasn’t about that life, so after I hit her one last time, I let her go. Charm and I walked off to the sounds of her girls trying to help her up and console her.

Since she’d already resigned herself to taking her ass whoopings like a woman, I was going to let her make it with the last one. But if she played again, it was going to be belt to ass for her and I was sure she knew that.

CHAPTER 33

DRIX

Iheard voices rising and my hand went to my gun while my eyes immediately went to my wife before I even caught a glimpse of what was wrong.

We were at the fundraiser concert and shit was going great… or at least it had been. We let B. Lynn open then drifted into some of the Trill Loyalty artists. Chamari performed at the halfway point. We’d gotten a few artists out then Bino had gone on. It seemed like things were going well. Shade was currently coming off stage and Kevo was heading on. Genie was up next then Myome and me. We were almost at the finish line.

The organizer, Dacia, said they’d made more money than they had in all the years they’d done fundraising before, even with the money they’d invested toward the location, which was cool. There were a few games and food and drink vendors who’d all agreed to donate a portion of their profits to the shelter.

Myome was in her element, running around with Steven and making sure everything was going the way she wanted. She’d already made it clear that she wanted us to fundraise for a different charity every year. I was down with that if it made her happy.

This event was her baby the way the label was my baby and I didn’t want it to get ruined.

I shifted on my feet and clicked the safety off my gun. Genie and the bum she let crawl on top of her were arguing and I noted that nobody was really paying attention to them where we were backstage. I caught Shade’s gaze and he lifted an eyebrow and nudged his head toward them.

I shook my head.

She’d made it clear that she wasn’t ready to leave. We didn’t need anybody else getting involved. I knew Shade could take him. I also knew if that man got his ass whooped yet again he’d hit Genie harder the next time. Since I’d offered to kill him twice now, I couldn’t make a move until she gave me a green light.

Victims of abuse had their entire brains altered. I wasn’t going to get buddy out of there just for Genie to turn me in and be on the daytime news saying I was violent and crazy and she wanted justice for the father of her child.

I’d made it clear that she had somewhere to land if she left and I’d stand on that. I couldn’t want it for her more than she did, especially not when my wife, parents, and both siblings were here.

Hiring the guys as security had been a smart move overall. The same way they rode for me, they rode for Myome and it was cool knowing they would look out for her when I couldn’t and I could make sure they were on the street less and financially taken care of in the process.

I was the type to fight, but I wasn’t against gun play if it came down to it. Bullets ain’t have no fucking names, no matter how good your aim was and, there were too many people here and too many variables. I also knew the security we had would blow someone’s nose off their face if they thought they needed to and that could be a disaster waiting to happen. All this shit was a liability.

As long as the dude didn’t speak to my family or put his hands on Genie in front of me, the two of them could argue until they passed out.

I caught myself glancing back and forth from the stage to them though, just to make sure things weren’t escalating.

“Genie!” I barked and she and her baby daddy both looked at me. “You’re up.” I nudged my head toward the stage. “Warm up. Kevo has three songs left.”

“Okay.” She jerked her hand from her man and walked toward Myome and Charm with one of the technicians.

Her baby daddy glanced at me. I lifted my shirt to show my gun.
