“Exactly.”

The two of us had a nice late lunch then went to get our nails and toes done. Afterwards, we headed back to the hotel and I shed my shoes as soon as I was inside and prepped for a shower.

Drix had already texted and told me he was going to run to a nearby studio, so I collapsed on the couch in my bathrobe and called Zamir.

He answered after four rings that felt like a lifetime.

“Myome?” He sounded genuinely confused by my call, which I didn’t necessarily blame him for.

“Hey.”

“Hey? You okay?”

“Yeah. I’m fine. I promise. I was actually calling to see if you had space on your schedule to take on a new client.”

“Uh, yeah. I can accept new clients. What do you know about the case?”

“It’s a custody case, and it should be open and shut, but Drix figured if he was going to spend the money he may as well keep it in the family.”

“Drix?” he repeated. “He’s going to family court?”

“Yep.”

“Myome,” he said and sighed. “What are the chances that the baby is his?”

“There isn’t a chance,” I sniped. “Do you want the job or not?”

“Is that nigga fucking around on you?”

“Zamir, I just told you there isn’t a chance.”

“And you’re staying?” He ignored what I’d said.

“Forget I asked. Goodbye.”

“Wait. Wait,” he said quickly. “Myome, I’m not trying to argue with you. I’m just trying to make sure you’re good.”

“Since when do we make sure each other is good, Zamir?”

“Since now,” he deadpanned. “Whether we talk all the time or not, you’re still my sister just as much as Major is my brother. I love y’all and am here if y’all need me. You know that.”

“Okay.” I didn’t bother pointing out that I didn’t actually know that. I hadn’t called him to argue or to hash out our family drama. This wasn’t the time for that. “So, do you want the job or not?” I repeated.

“I want the job. Have him call me.”

“Great. Thanks. I’ll pass your number along.”

“Okay, cool.” He paused for a beat, then exhaled. “Have you talked to Mom and Pops?”

“Nope.”

“Maybe you should.”

“Why would I do that?”

“I mean you called me.”

“Drix recommended I call you so he could keep the money in the family.”
