MILO
“And then he came to Kevin and Marcy’s with me, and he looked so scary that Kevin even pissed his pants,” I told Ray over the phone while meandering around my kitchen.
“You don’t think Kevin will cause any trouble, do you?” Ray asked seriously.
Ray was like a calm summer day, and I was the tornado that blasted in and disrupted shit all over the place.
I mean, literally, that’s what happened before we were friends.
“No, no—everything is fine. Promise,” I swore.
“It sounds like you really like him,” Ray added.
I groaned. Ray hadthe worsttaste in men. That wasn’t shade I was throwing, either, because we’d met by dating the same guy, so apparently I also had horrible taste in men.
“I do not need a boyfriend.”
Ray sighed. “Everyone needs someone special in their life.”
“Yeah? Well you’re my someone special, Ray-bear.”
Ray snorted softly, because the two of us were like brothers. Soul mates, even, but only of the platonic variety. There was zero sexual chemistry between us. Probably because we both liked douche bags, which is how we had both ended up dating Andrew (the POS).
I’d found out that I was the side piece, promptly contacted Ray, and then somehow or another we’d ended up being best friends.
Probably because of my winning personality. Obviously.
“What about that dickbag you were talking to?” I asked.
I wasn’t even being rude. Even Ray had said the guy was kind of an asshole. But Ray was in love with being in love, or someshit like that, and he gravitated toward assholes. I would break him of that habit if it was the last thing I did.
I liked to think I had learned and grown from my experiences, although really I just hadn’t dated anyone since Andrew.
“Eh,” Ray answered.
Ughhh. An “eh” meant bad shit for Ray. “What did he do? I’ll fuck him up.”
It was almost like I could hear Ray shrug through the phone. Finally, he answered, “He just wasn’t a nice person.”
“Oh, shit. What did he do? Murder babies? Skin some people alive? Because I think the last time you said someone wasn’t a nice person, we were watchingDahmer.”
“I’m fine. Everything is fine. Seriously. It’s fine.”
I wasn’t at all reassured. “That is WAY too many ‘fine’s. Say fine again if someone is there with you.”
“No one is here with me.” Ray sighed. “Honest. We were just having a perfectly normal conversation before we started talking about guys.”
I huffed. I could tell when something was wrong, and I should’ve picked up on it sooner. “I’m on my way over. Don’t leave. Lock the doors,” I said, then I hung up the phone before Ray could answer.
Was I maybe being extreme? Yeah, but Ray was my bsf, and I’d do anything for him. I didn’t have many people, so I cherished the ones I did have.
I grabbed my keys and contemplated what I’d need. Since I’d started in the fix-it business, I had acquired some… stuff. I grabbed my backpack and threw in my gun, my knife, some duct tape (seriously, that shit worked for all kinds of stuff), some bleach wipes, a spare set of clothes… What else did I need? Fuck it. I could improvise. I’d certainly done it in the past.
As I was walking out my door, I realized having Rowan around for something like this would be super helpful. If only there wassome way to summon my tall, sexy ginger. Although I supposed that I could go stalk him down…
Nah, not enough time. I had to go rescue Ray. Maybe. Or at least comfort a broken heart. With that thought, I walked back into the house, grabbed a whole bunch of sugary and salty snacks, and threw them in the backpack, too.
How could I forget snacks? After all, murdering someone was hungry work.
