“One second.” I ran to the bathroom and grabbed a towel and washcloth. Using warm water on the washcloth, I took it back to the bed and cleaned her up, using the towel to dry her off.

Afterwards, Kate lay curled against my chest, one leg tangled with mine while the house sat quiet around us. I brushed my fingers up and down her bare spine slowly while she traced lazy circles over my ribs.

“I’ve never had this before,” I admitted.

She tilted her head slightly. “What?”

I glanced around the room. At the life we’d somehow built without me noticing. The cot in the corner. Her clothes mixed with mine in the dresser. Noah’s tiny jacket hanging over the chair.

“Any of it,” I said honestly. “Something real.”

Her expression softened. “Youarereal, Finn.”

“My old man used to say men like me don’t get families,” I told her. “Said we ruin things. Break them.”

Kate pushed herself up slightly then, focusing on me seriously. “He was wrong. You protect people,” she whispered. “You love hard. You’d burn the world down for the people you care about.”

I huffed. “Yeah, probably.”

Her lips twitched. “You gave Noah safety,” she continued. “You gave me room to breathe again.” Her hand slid over my chest. “You gave us a home.”

Emotion lodged in my chest, because she didn’t understand. They were the home. Not the house. Not the club.

Them.

I pulled her closer, pressing my mouth against her hair. “You and that boy,” I said roughly, “you’re everything to me. You both are my home.”

Her breath caught, then she whispered the words that damn near wrecked me completely.

“We saved each other.”

I closed my eyes and held her tighter. “Yeah, baby,” I murmured. “We did.”

I finally had something worth fighting for.
