Annette hesitates. "You've already done enough."
Mom walks over and cups her cheek.
"My dear..." Her smile is impossibly gentle. "You coming tonight was the best part of my day."
Annette's eyes glisten. Before she can answer, Mom pulls her into another hug.
This one is quieter. Longer. The kind only mothers know how to give.
As we step out onto the porch a few minutes later, Mom follows us to the door.
She hugs me. Then Annette.
She kisses my cheek.
Then smiles at both of us.
"Drive carefully."
We both nod. She starts to close the door, then opens it one more time.
"Oh..."
We turn back. Her smile is warm enough to light the entire porch.
"We'll see you soon."
Not come back.
Not I hope so.
Just...We'll see you soon.
As though there had never been any doubt.
As though Annette has belonged here all along.
Chapter thirty-five
Jamie
All of Me
My truck rolls through Briar Cove beneath a sky brushed with the last colors of sunset.
For several miles, neither of us says a word.
Annette leans her head against the window, her hand resting lightly over mine on the center console. It’s the kind of silence that only comes after a really good day.
Comfortable.
Peaceful.
Complete.
Finally, she smiles. “I adore your parents.”
I laugh softly. “I was hoping you would.”
