"He's good," my mom boasts, clapping her hands when Fender finishes his first set and steps past his usual harem of women who come to listen to him sing as he makes his way toward the bar where the guys are sitting.
"With a voice like his, I'm surprised his name isn't in neon lights and his songs on the radio."
"Dad said some big wig offered him a contract some years ago, but Fender turned him down. He said that kind of life wasn't for him."
My mom nods. "I get it. It's like that with all these men who are a part of the club. Men like Fender are a different breed. Their club and their brothers are what's important to them. And there is nothing wrong with that," she pauses, becoming quiet for a second before saying, "So…"
I turn my attention away from the guys and face my mom when she begins to speak again. "Crow is throwing a party next weekend at the clubhouse for my birthday, and I was wondering if you'd want to come up for the day." She throws her hand up and adds, "You don't have to. I just thought…"
"I'd love to," I cut her off and smile.
"It means a lot to me that you'd want to be there, Piper." She places her hand over the top of mine.
"It means a lot that you invited me."
A grating cackle interrupts mine and my mom's conversation. I look over my shoulder to see that the object of my annoyance is none other than one of the women from Fender's fan club. Only it's my man she has her sight set on. I watch as the brunette tries desperately to get Tai's attention. You would think with the way he's ignoring her, the bitch would give up. Desperate much. I roll my eyes and sigh.
"Unfortunately, that is something you never get used to." My mom gestures toward the bar.
"No, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to put the woman in her place."
Standing, I make my way toward the bar. As if he can sense my presence, Tai turns on his stool, meeting my eyes. Coming up behind him, I slide my hand up his back while maneuvering my body directly between him and the desperate woman beside him, effectively nudging her out of the way. I don't bother looking at her.
That is until she scoffs, "Rude."
Slowly, I turn and confront her. "No, what's rude is a lady so desperate for a man's attention that she can't even take a hint when he flat out ignores her, leaving me, his woman, to handle her myself. Now, if you would kindly move along," I make a shooting motion with my hand, "and cackle somewhere else, me and my eardrums would greatly appreciate it."
With an offended huff, the woman hops off her stool and makes her way to the opposite end of the bar to where her friends are.
When I turn back around, Tai has an amused look on his face.
"What?" I narrow my eyes. "Don't act like you wouldn't do the same thing if the tables were turned. Hell, you get pissed when any man so much as looks in my direction," I sass.
"She's right, brother." My dad walks up and slaps Tai on the back. "And just so you know, your woman is always right."
"Welcome to the fuckin' club," Uncle Abel says, raising his beer bottle. My dad and Crow do the same, making me and my mom burst out laughing.
Later that night,I lay draped over Tai's chest while he rubs lazy circles across my back, feeling sated from the two orgasms he gave me.
"What ya thinkin' about?" Tai's deep sleep filled voice asks.
"I'm thinking about how happy I am at this moment and how perfect today was. And I'm thinking about how much I love you."
We both fall silent for a moment when I ask, "What about you? What are you thinking about?"
"I'm thinkin' if I died tonight, I would die the happiest fuckin' man alive."
