A path had been cleared.

The other team’s goalie looked ready. He was poised and prepared to defend that net.

Sawyer raced toward him, his stick managing that puck as if on autopilot. The clock counted down.

Time was running out.

Morgan held her breath as Sawyer swung his arms back. His stick connected with that puck and it rocketed forward.

When it hit the back of the net with only three seconds left in the game, Morgan howled and picked up Nia, hugging the girl to her chest.

“He did it!” Nia screamed. “He did it!”

“He really wants to marry you,” Brooke said. “Go down there and claim that man!”

Morgan handed Nia off to Ellie and wiggled past Brooke to get out of the aisle. She raced down the steps toward the rink. At the moment, Anchors players surrounded Sawyer and she couldn’t see him.

Then he emerged from the group. He tore off his helmet and his hazel gaze locked on her.

The Anchors coach waved her over and led her onto the ice as Sawyer skated over to her. On his skates he was much taller than she was, but that didn’t stop her from throwing her arms around him. He hooked his hands under her arms and lifted her, fusing his mouth to hers. She should have been cold on that ice, but every atom of her was on fire instead.

“Marry me, baby,” Sawyer said when he set her back on her feet.

“Okay.”

He picked her up again and spun them around. The rink cameras must have been on them because the fans erupted once again.

Sawyer set her down and his coach handed him the microphone. He took Morgan’s hand and led her to center ice. Not letting go of her hand, he said, “She said yes, people!”

Someone sounded the goal horn and then Sawyer’s lips were on hers as the fans joined together to hum the “Wedding March.”

“You won the game with that goal,” she said when the kiss ended.

Sawyer tipped her chin up. “Oh, I won much more than that, baby.”
