I didn’t.

His mouth touched mine.

Softly at first.

A question.

I answered by gripping the front of his jacket and pulling him closer.

The kiss deepened.

Warmth cut through the cold Alaskan night.

His arm circled my waist.

For one perfect moment, there was no Nightfall.

No list.

No mountain.

Only us.

When he finally drew back, his forehead rested against mine.

“About time, Commander,” I whispered.

Rook laughed.

“I was waiting for a quiet moment.”

A crash sounded inside the warehouse.

Sam shouted something about his forklift.

I smiled.

“You may be waiting a while.”

Rook kissed me again.

This one wasn’t a question.

It was a promise.

Not an ending.

A beginning.

His radio crackled.

“Rook,” Fathom said. “We found something.”

Rook closed his eyes.

I laughed.

“You had to say quiet moment.”
