"You know everyone is watching us."

A smile touched my lips.

"That's generally how first dances work."

"I was hoping they might get distracted."

I laughed quietly.

"You've met our friends."

Her eyes sparkled with amusement.

"Unfortunately, yes."

The conversation ended there because neither of us felt any particular need to fill the silence. The music carried us through the moment while the reality of the day settled more deeply around us.

For months we had planned, discussed, organised, and anticipated this wedding. Now it had finally happened, and for the first time all day we had an opportunity to simply enjoy being together.

As the song ended, applause echoed throughout the ballroom.

Other couples soon joined the dance floor, transforming the formal first dance into a celebration that included everyone. Family members danced with spouses, teachers danced with firefighters, and people who had never met before the wedding laughed together as though they had known one another for years.

Elyssa and Cody engaged in what appeared to be serious conversation as he held her close and my eyebrows shot up when their lips met.

“There’s obviously something we’ve been missing,” Aurora commented.

The atmosphere became increasingly relaxed as the evening progressed, and before long even some of the more reserved guests found themselves joining in. Watching the crews from Firehouse 99 attempt formal dancing proved particularly entertaining. Several firefighters possessed considerably more confidence than ability. Others demonstrated unexpected talent.

Ingrid somehow managed to organise an entire group dance that involved half the ballroom within minutes, while Cody spent most of the evening alternating between dancing, socializing, and pretending he wasn't keeping an eye on Elyssa. The result was exactly what Aurora and I had hoped for. Instead of feeling like a formal event, the reception felt like a gathering of people who genuinely cared about one another.

As the evening progressed, photographers captured moments I knew would eventually fill albums and picture frames. Aurora danced with her father. I danced with my mother and the three tiered cake was cut. Friends took the opportunity to have professional photographs taken, stories were exchanged, and laughter seemed to follow every conversation. The celebration possessed a warmth that could never have been created through planning alone. It came entirely from the people surrounding us.

Desserts appeared and the dance floor somehow became even more crowded than before. Conversations stretched late into the evening while music, laughter, and stories filled the space. Nobody seemed particularly eager for the night to end.

Eventually, however, even perfect days reach their conclusion. One by one guests began saying goodbye. Family members offered hugs and friends shared final congratulations.

Promises were made to our parents that we would catch up before leaving for Hawaii on our honeymoon in two days.

The ballroom gradually emptied until only a handful of people remained.

Aurora and I stood near the entrance while saying goodbye to the final guests opting not to leave before everyone else. Elyssa hugged Aurora tightly before pulling back just far enough to inspect her.

"You look happy."

Aurora laughed.

"I am happy."

Aurora whispered something in her friend’s ear causing her cheeks to flame pink.

"You deserve all of this," Elyssa murmured.

The two women embraced again before Elyssa glanced at Cody and finally stepped away.

Cody approached shortly afterward. He shook my hand before pulling me into a brief hug.

"Congratulations."
