Chapter One
Chloe
“Breathe,” I whispered to myself, trying to calm my nerves. With this job interview, I was either walking into my execution or my salvation.
Promptly at three thirty, I knocked on the heavy wooden door of the office to which I’d been instructed to go. It had already been a hell of a day. Things could only get better, right? Maybe I could end it on a positive note.
A deep voice from the other side told me to enter.
Taking one last gulp of air, I plastered on my best interview-worthy smile. I could only pray it didn’t come across as desperate as I was feeling. Hopefully my expression declared I’m ready to do any and all of your shit as your assistant. Even if that meant I had to call the wife to cancel dinner while booking a hotel room for the girlfriend.
Good times.
My friends had always told me I was too nice. But my actions earlier in the day proved even the nicest person had a breaking point. Unfortunately, my mistake could end up costing me my job if this second chance didn’t work out. The thought of calling my mother to tell her the news was devastating.
I stepped inside the spacious office, my gaze immediately drawn to the view. The twenty-eighth floor overlooked the incredible architecture of Dubai’s cityscape. However, my attention was quickly diverted when the sexiest man alive rose from his desk chair. All of the oxygen in the room disappeared. Or more likely, I’d forgotten how to breathe.
Voice, don’t fail me now. “Hi, uh, Mr. Samuels, I’m Chloe Mattson. I hope now is still a good time?”
My smile faded when icy blue eyes met mine. Oh, boy. He was intimidating in his expensive, charcoal-gray, well-tailored suit. He stood over six feet tall with broad shoulders. His dark hair was cut short in a military style.
“Hello, Ms. Mattson, I was expecting you. Come in and take a seat. And please call me Aiden.”
I swallowed hard at the sexy timbre of his American voice, which complemented his full lips set in a clean-shaven face.
As I took one of the beige, upholstered visitor chairs in front of his desk, I tried unsuccessfully to quell my anxiety. “Nice to meet you, Aiden, and please me call Chloe.” Jesus, I sound like a caveman with my jumbled words, an unfortunate habit when I was nervous. “I meant please call me Chloe.”
He sat behind his massive desk and glanced at what appeared to be a copy of my resumé. “How long have you worked for Delmont Security?”
Jumping straight into the interview. Okay. I could do this. I smoothed back my blond hair while reminding myself not to play with it. “About eight months.”
“You’ve been working with Tom Wilde the entire time?”
I tried not to cringe at the name of my former boss. It had only been two hours since he’d fired me and I was still reeling from the incident.
“Yes. I’ve been working for Tom since I started there.” And whatever you do, please do not ask why we parted ways.
“What made you leave the position?”
Crap. “It was a mutual decision based on incompatibility.” I hoped my words sounded professional yet vague enough they weren’t a lie.
He studied me like he was a human lie detector. Was the temperature getting hotter in the room?
I squirmed under his heavy scrutiny.
“Reid, the interim HR director, indicated there may have been a specific incident. One I’d rather hear about from you than from Tom.”
Double crap. I inhaled, realizing I had no choice but to come clean. “Yes, I suppose I’d rather you hear it from me, too.”
He waited, his amazing blue eyes focused on mine, making it clear he wouldn’t settle for less than the truth.
I took a deep breath, hoping to steady myself, not exactly proud of what I had to say. “I may have, uh, called Tom a pussy.”
Both Aiden’s brows shot up with surprise. “Come again?”
I forced air into my lungs and upped the volume in my shaking voice. It was taking everything I had to keep my composure. “I said, I may have called Tom a pussy.”
For a moment Aiden didn’t speak. Then, looking as though he was trying to cover his shock, he cleared his throat. “May have?”
