“I said I wouldn’t.”
Had he? I didn’t remember him agreeing not to. “You promise not to come into the club again?”
There. Finally, a jaw tick. I was weirdly proud to have caused the small reaction.
“Do you want me to return to the club?”
His question wasn’t one I’d expected. Although, frankly, it was all I could think about. Kissing him on the couch, rubbing up against him. “No.”
“Fine.”
There. It was done. And I was delusional to believe it could’ve meant anything to him.
Chapter Fourteen
Aiden
I’d been impressed with Chloe’s ability to keep things professional over the last couple days. Meanwhile, I’d been ready to jump out of my skin whenever she was around me. Today’s conversation had left me oddly unsatisfied. Especially when she’d said she didn’t want me returning to the club.
She wasn’t my responsibility, yet I couldn’t let it go. To the point I was breaking a promise and had come back at the club tonight. As soon as I walked in, I realized that if these last couple days in the office had been difficult, watching her dance brought a new level of torture.
The thought of the danger she was putting herself in nearly set me off. I arrived at the club early, so instead of seeing her out on the floor, I had a view of her up on the stage where I noticed the details I’d not caught the first time I’d been here.
Her body moved with the music, but her eyes were flat. As if she was programmed. As if she was only here to earn money to send to her family. She had to be desperate to be doing this. To be taking this risk. I’d spent some time digging into her family over the last couple of days but without much to show. The only thing I had verified was a good amount of credit card debt. But I needed to dig deeper as to the why. There was a story there. Something I’d bet was related to the older brother she’d yet to mention. My instincts rarely led me wrong.
I tracked the way she performed with a fake smile and rehearsed moves on stage. The moment she was done with her number, her gaze swept over in my direction. I witnessed her double take. Wondering how she would take my presence, I was pleasantly surprised to see her close the distance between us.
“You’re back.” Her words were quiet as she stepped in front of me.
I took out a hundred AED which was equivalent to about twenty-five US dollars. “I am.”
She hesitated but, with a flick of her eyes towards all of the security, finally straddled my lap. Taking the paper bill, she slid it into her G-string.
Instinctively, my hands went up, but she shook her head.
“Absolutely no touching out here on the floor.”
Made sense. It also soothed my jealous streak to know she didn’t normally allow men to touch her. Right now I felt irrationally possessive. To the point there was no way I could watch her dance on another man’s lap. I was about to take out more cash, but she leaned in and whispered in my ear.
“Don’t.”
“Then let’s go to a private room.” It hadn’t been my plan to do so, but I needed her. Alone. Even if it was only for ten minutes.
Again she hesitated, but she must’ve made up her mind because she took my hand and led me through the familiar doors on the other side of the club. This time I took more care to notice the protocol. Her nod to the man with the wire in his ear. The cameras covering every square inch. I had no idea who did the security here, but it was clearly top-notch.
Once we were in a similar room to the last one, she led me to the couch. As soon as she was on my lap, she whispered in my ear.
“You’re going to get me in trouble. You can’t keep showing up here.”
“Don’t you have regulars?”
She sighed. “Yes, but you can’t be one of them. If I make a habit of this back room, they’ll think I’m open to doing it all the time.”
I tensed at the implication. “Then quit. Come work for me on the weekends instead.”
“You know I can’t.”
I put my hands on her hips, grinding her against me like I had the last time, enjoying the gasp of pleasure from her lips. “What’s the money for?”
