My eyes rolled. “Sorry, Wendy. I’ll see if I can interrupt him.” I knocked on his door, opening it slightly to see he was at his desk, his head in his hands.
He looked up once I stepped through.
“Sorry to disturb you. Are you off the call?”
He sighed. “It’s okay. I’m off. What is it?”
“Miranda Westbrook is down in the lobby.”
At least this appeared to be news to him, judging by the way his eyes widened. “Here, now?”
“Yes. I’m afraid so. Wendy from reception called. She told me Miranda already ate her out about having to wait.”
His brows went sky high. “Well, we can’t have that, can we?”
Huh? Then it hit me. My words. “Chewed. Mother trucker. I meant chewed her out.”
He shook his head, chuckling. “I’ll go downstairs and deal with it.”
Jealousy was a hard emotion to tamp down, and when he took his briefcase with him, I was very disappointed. That meant he had no intention of returning to the office. Which indicated he was leaving with her.
Later that night, I found myself wondering if I was still supposed to come over to his place. Aiden hadn’t texted to let me know differently, and I was afraid if I reached out, he’d postpone the conversation. Considering how important it was for me to pay him back and how curious I was about Miranda, I made the drive over.
His apartment was three miles away from mine in a newer building. I parked on the street, walked inside, and took the elevator up to the eleventh floor. The halls were quiet. Probably because most of the people who lived here were still on holiday break. Once I reached his number, I raised my hand and knocked.
The brunette who opened the door was stunning.
“Can I help you?” she asked, looking as though she’d stepped out of a fashion ad. She was wearing a stylish print dress paired with black leather boots.
“I may have the wrong address.” Despite my words, I knew I didn’t. This was Miranda. In Aiden’s apartment. Answering his door.
She stepped outside into the hall, shutting the door behind her. “If you’re looking for Aiden, he’s in the shower.”
“Oh.” My heart sank.
“Who are you?”
“I’m Chloe. I work with him.”
“You’re his secretary, aren’t you?”
I didn’t care for the little stance she’d taken with her hands on her fancy hips; nor did I like her condescending tone and haughty stare. “Yes. Can you tell him I stopped by?”
“Sure, I’ll tell him although it may be awhile before he gets back to you considering his girlfriend is in town.”
“Don’t you mean ex-girlfriend?” It was childish and overstepping, but I couldn’t help the aggressive comment.
Direct hit given the way her eyes narrowed. She was interrupted from mentally clawing off my face when the door was yanked open.
“What’s going on?” came Aiden’s voice.
His hair looked to be wet from the shower, his clothes freshly changed to casual attire. For all I knew, they’d just had sex.
It was obvious who was intruding. “I’m guessing you forgot about me coming over.”
His jaw clenched while he shifted his attention to me, then back to Miranda. I wondered what he saw in the comparison. A girl with secondhand clothes whose hair was in dire need of a cut versus a bombshell who clearly came from class and money. Bet she’d never had to strip or prostitute herself to pay back a seedy loan shark for the money her brother had taken.
“Sorry, Chloe. This isn’t the best time. I’ll text you later.”
