I was rooted to the spot. Once it went quiet, I stepped further into the room and watched her head come up when she noticed me. She put a finger to her lips and slowly extricated herself from the bed so as not to disturb Penelope.

Seeing such a small child hooked up to so many machines was overwhelming. But I forced my attention on Tory. “She okay?”

“Yes. She woke up for a few minutes while you were gone. The doctors say she’s responding well to the treatment. And she’s been in good spirits, which is important. But we’ve been down this road before, so I don’t want to get my hopes up.” She glanced down at the bags I’d brought with me. “Oh, it looks like you brought us some more clothes. Thank you and for Penny’s blanket.”

“Happy to. I brought dinner too.” I put the clothing bag down on a chair and the food bag on the small table.

“Thank you.”

“Also, Mona threatened if I don’t bring your dirty laundry back for her to do, then she won’t let me in the house.”

Tory grinned. “I don’t believe you for a second. That woman adores you.”

“Thank goodness I have at least one in my life who does.”

“Oh, I don’t know. The one in Vegas sounded eager to see you.”

The fact Tory remembered was interesting.

“Anyhow. Thank you for understanding about earlier and bringing dinner to me. I’ve yet to taste good hospital food.”

“Are you okay with me being in the room?” I knew germs were a concern.

“It’s fine so long as we stay on the other side of the room. You were just around her last week.”

This was true. And I’d never come if I was unwell.

The owner of the steakhouse across from one of my clubs had taken great care, including a tablecloth, real silverware, and a basket of bread along with dinner.

Tory sat down and eyed her filet, mashed potatoes, asparagus, and side of mushrooms. “I’m a bit overwhelmed.”

I found my face heating. Now that I looked at it, this dinner screamed more date than bringing a quick meal to the hospital. “I know the owner, and he aims to please.”

She dug in, making a sound in the back of her throat which made my dick sit up and take notice. No, no, this wouldn’t do.

“This is amazing. My compliments to the chef.”

“I’ll be sure to pass them on. Did you tell Penelope’s father about her hospital stay?”

She’d never mentioned him, but I found myself curious. I didn’t miss the way she instantly stiffened as if I’d suggested she contact the devil himself.

“Absolutely not.”
