Suddenly, he stopped.

“Don’t you dare.”

“Tell me,” he demanded.

What did it matter if he knew the truth? This was only one night. “Fine. It’s been over four years. Don’t make me regret not waiting longer.”

He growled in my ear before taking over our cadence with an animalistic fervor. I loved it. It felt as if I was taking him out of his usual realm of control and pushing him beyond his limits. It matched my own wild need. Here I’d thrown caution to the wind in my craving for a release and damned the consequences of sleeping with the enemy.

But was he still the enemy?

I wasn’t about to take the time to examine the thought. I was on edge. My entire body tensed for a moment before my fingernails dug into his shoulders, and my world exploded. I was vaguely aware of my cry of release and the roar of Chance’s climax as he held me tight to thrust up one last time.

The sound of our ragged breaths filled the room as I came down from my high. I moved slightly, using his strong shoulders as leverage to lift myself off of him and unsteadily get to my feet. While he set about taking care of the condom, I quickly found my clothes. I needed to escape before any regret could seep into the moment. Thank goodness for the darkness as it served to mitigate how awkward this suddenly was.

Grabbing my phone, I checked on Penelope and decided to use her as an excuse. “I need to get back.”

He hadn’t moved from the chair. “Okay.”

“Um, see you later.” Lamest after-sex words ever, but in my defense, I’d never had a one-night stand. And I’d certainly never fucked my boss. Pretty sure Hallmark did not make a card for such an occasion.

My feet couldn’t move fast enough out the door and into the night. I gulped in the air as if I’d run a marathon. Damn. So that had just happened. And now I was like a ninja, quickly leaving in the night. A postcoital, awkward-as-hell ninja. The thought made me smile until I winced with trepidation of what tomorrow would bring.

We would simply pretend it never happened. I chose to believe it was possible.
