“Yes.”

Despite my jealousy, not to mention my attraction to him, I too wished to remain friends. It might be stupid, but something told me Caleb didn’t have a lot of them, so it felt special. “It bothered me too. I’ll consult my list, and I’ll text you some ideas tomorrow. Okay?”

He gave me a tentative smile. “Yes, good.”

If it was good, then why were we both still standing here in my apartment building lobby like awkward teenagers who weren’t sure if there was a good night kiss coming after a first date.

But I hadn’t been out on a date with him; he’d been out with another woman. And he hadn’t given any indication this was anything more than an apology to a friend.

“Have a good night.”

He sighed, shoving his hands in his pockets. “Good night, Daisy.”

Maybe if I’d received any kind of sign he wanted more than friendship, I’d have pressed for more or invited him up, but instead I found myself alone in the elevator on my way up to my apartment.

I’d just gotten inside and slipped off my heels when the buzzer went off. I flipped on the intercom, figuring Caleb must’ve forgotten to tell me something.

“Hello?” I answered.

“It’s me.” His voice sounded unsure.

“What’s up?”

“I don’t know.”

I clicked the unlock button without another word. Maybe he still had something on his mind?

I’d opened my front door in time to see him stepping off the elevator. “Hi—” My greeting died in my throat because of the intensity radiating off of him as he stalked toward me.

Once he was close enough, he didn’t hesitate in crashing his lips to mine.

Chapter Twenty-One

Caleb

I couldn’t deny my attraction to Daisy any longer. I’d been going out of my mind ever since leaving the club this evening. The problem started with my disbelief at seeing her at the party, followed by my guilt in being there with Ava, and lastly morphed into jealousy when I’d spotted her leaving with a large, well-dressed man.

The second my lips found hers, I knew one taste would never be enough. The kiss exceeded every imaginary scenario I’d come up with over the last few weeks.

Still, I’d gone from zero to one hundred, and it was clear she was shocked by the way her body tensed.

I pulled back, searching her face. “I should’ve asked if I could kiss you. I didn’t mean to—”

She yanked me back to her, now an active participant in this madness.

I walked her into her apartment a few steps so I could use my foot to kick the door shut behind me. One of my hands rested on her hip, the other at the back of her neck.

Reluctantly, I broke the kiss, locking my gaze on her big green eyes. “This wasn’t part of the plan.”

“You planned not to kiss me?”

“Yeah, you want to hear about how it’s going?”

Her giggle bubbled up, causing me to grin.

“If it makes you feel any better, it wasn’t my plan to kiss someone, either, especially after eating French fries smothered in onions.”

“I only taste chocolate from the milkshake if you need to know.”
