He chuckled. “Looks like it wasn’t much protection to begin with. I’ll be fine.” His primary concern was protecting Sedona.
Cam made a quick right turn, doing a controlled skid onto a cross street, and stomped on the gas pedal. As the SUV leaped forward, more bullets slammed into the rear window.
He handed Sedona his phone. “Call David. Tell him we’re heading to the station and coming in hot.”
Cam hoped the Montgomery brothers arrived before he and Sedona became casualties.
CHAPTER SIX
SEDONA’S HANDS SHOOK as she located Cam’s call list and tapped David’s name. When the call connected, a deep male voice answered on the first ring.
“You’re late.”
“It’s Sedona.” Her voice shook as much as her hands.
“What’s wrong?”
“We’re under fire. Cam says we’re going to the station and coming in hot.”
“Copy that. What’s your ETA?”
She blinked. ETA?
“Ask Cam.”
Right. “What’s our ETA?”
“Ten minutes, I hope,” he muttered as he guided the SUV into another turn and sped ahead. “Hang on.” The vehicle slid into another turn.
Oh, man. If Cam kept this up, she would embarrass herself by getting carsick. This was not the time for her first episode of sickness. “Cam says ten minutes.”
“Where are you?”
“On the floor of Cam’s SUV.” Sedona clamped her hand around the edge of the seat. With another slide and more bullets pinging off the side of the SUV, she needed both hands to hold herself steady. After tapping the speakerphone on her screen, she set the phone in one of the cup holders and gripped the seat.
David chuckled. “Got it. Cam?”
“Anderson Ridge Road. We’re five minutes out. I’m running hot with lights and sirens. We have a black SUV on our tail with two passengers firing shots at us whenever we’re in range.”
“That’s telling.”
“Yep.” He gave David detailed descriptions of the three men in the SUV. “Haven’t seen a fourth person, so I can’t rule it out.”
“Copy that. Anything distinctive about the vehicle?”
“Nothing.” Cam sounded disgusted. “I can’t return fire to leave a mark. Too busy driving.”
“Understood. Caleb and Levi are one minute away.”
Cam scowled. “You tagged me?”
“Remember the friend who helped us locate Sedona?”
“Yeah, of course. I owe him a steak dinner for helping us last night.”
“He’ll be glad to hear that. Anyway, he used the GPS chip in your phone.”
“You know that’s illegal, right?”
