The other two continued to argue until David sighed. “They’re taking too long to decide what to do next. Let’s help them with that. You ready?”

“Yeah. Which one do you want?”

“Muscle guy is yours. I’ll take Skinny Boy.”

He rolled his eyes. “Should have known,” he murmured.

“Hey, if you want to switch, I’m good with it. Just thought you’d want the man who grabbed your woman and carried her off. We still don’t know what these men did to her.”

Cam’s fist tightened around the handgrip of his Sig. Didn’t need reminding of that, not if he wanted to do his job the right way instead of the way he wanted to do it at that moment. “Nope. Big Guy is mine.”

“On my count. Do not move early, Sims.”

He scowled. Really? Come on. He wasn’t a rookie.

David started the countdown.

When the boss reached one, Cam surged closer to the clearing, weapon aimed straight at Big Guy’s heart. One wrong move, and Big Guy would no longer be a problem for Sedona or Cam. “Police! Freeze!”

David emerged from the shadows to step to the edge of the clearing, his weapon aimed at Skinny Dude.

Skinny gave a slow grin. His eyes, though, were two cold orbs. This man wouldn’t think twice about pulling the trigger. Big Guy stood frozen in place as though he’d turned into a block of ice.

“Turn around slowly,” Cam ordered. He watched carefully in case Big Guy made a run for it or pulled out a weapon. Of the two, he figured the latter was more likely. The man was loaded down with weapons, like the Montgomery brothers. And himself, Cam admitted. If he’d been pulled over by a fellow officer, he’d have had a hard time explaining the abundance of weapons unless he could flash his badge.

Skinny Boy slowly turned toward Cam and smirked. “Well, look who we have here. The boyfriend, Cameron Sims.”

He stilled. “Who are you?”

“Doesn’t matter. But your being here proves that you care, doesn’t it?”

Yeah, he cared a lot, but he was also a cop. He was bound by his oath to protect the public. Sedona was a citizen of Morgan County. Of course he’d be here.

“What do you want with Sedona and me?” Big Guy’s comment proved that someone wanted both of them. But why? That was the question. Had his past come back to bite him, or had the source of trouble come from Sedona’s past? Either way, they both needed to be on their guard because someone wanted to take them down.

CHAPTER FOUR

SEDONA SAT AS still as a statue on the tree branch, afraid any movement would draw an eye to her precarious hiding place. Should she reveal herself now that Cam was here?

For that matter, how did Cam know where to find her? Tension wracked her muscles as she watched the action play out in the clearing below her.

Linebacker slowly turned to face Cam and said, “Well, look who we have here. The boyfriend, Cameron Sims.”

Sedona’s blood ran cold through her veins. He knew Cam’s name. How did he learn that information, and how much more about them did he know? Even though the thug got their relationship wrong, he had too much information about a law enforcement officer. This situation was too dangerous for Cam.

She swallowed hard. Would he have to move somewhere else and start over? She hoped not. Sedona liked Cam.

Her conscience poked at her until she admitted silently that she more than liked Cam Sims and had since the day they’d met. He was a great man and fun to be around. And yes, Cam was a great help in clearing out her grandfather’s white-elephant house, the gift that just kept on giving.

“Who are you?” Cam asked.

“Doesn’t matter,” Linebacker said. “But your being here proves that you care, doesn’t it?”

Cam remained silent a moment, then said, “What do you want with Sedona and me?”

And that was the real question, wasn’t it? Why did these men want her, or rather, why did their boss want her?

“You know better than that, cop. I’m no easy pushover, unlike most of the wusses you deal with on the job. You might have caught me, but it won’t do you any good because I’m not talking.”
