“Perfect,” he says. “You look perfect.”

“Whatever, creep.”

“I’ve got something to show you. Come on out the window.”

“Why out the window?”

“Closer to my car. I’ll help you down.”

I glance out the window. I can make it down without Thomas’ help, but it would be more ladylike to walk out the door. Thomas already thinks I’m some type of hoochie, I don’t need to give him any more proof.

“I don’t need help,” I say, tossing him my backpack and then leaping out the window on my own. It’s a miracle I don’t stumble over. Thomas slings my backpack over his shoulder and grins.

“I look like shit. You look smart.”

“Thanks and you do look like shit.”

“I eat a lot,” Thomas says. “Need to get a head start. We’d better go.”

“Where do you even park your car?”

Since cars aren’t allowed on campus, everyone stashes theirs in secret spots within a mile radius of the school. Faculty just pretend they can’t see the influx of Porsches, Rolls Royces and other luxury vehicles in random places around town only during times that coincide with the school year.

Thomas smirks, and I bet he has a devious place to keep his car. His family’s allegedly loaded so I bet it’s some ridiculous gaudy sports car too.

“Off road from the boathouse in the woods. Great secret spot.”

“You have a talent for being the creepiest guy I know. Every time.”

He turns over his shoulder to look at me as I struggle to keep up with his tall man’s stride. That smirk on his face makes me want to smack him.

“What’s creepy about me?”

He has to be joking. I roll my eyes and hustle to keep up.

“You know what’s creepy.”

“The thing with your knickers?”

“Several things, Thomas. Now let’s get to your car before we get caught.”

“We won’t get caught.”

“I don’t mean by faculty.”

He sighs. “I’m sorry I fudged your plan.”

“It’s fine. Whoever it was might be hurt today. I’ll keep an eye out at school.”

“I’ll do the same,” he says.

“I don’t need your help,” I huff. Thomas shrugs.

“I know,” he answers. “Doesn’t matter. You have it.”

“We still aren’t friends.”

“We’re enemies with breakfast benefits.”
