'Connor - answer the question.'
'I didn't need to use my supernatural powers. I saw him drive off an hour or so ago. Threw a load of stuff in the boot. He seemed in a hurry to get away.'
'Why did he leave?'
'How should I know? I'm not his keeper.'
'Did he pop over here while I was out?'
Connor hesitated slightly. 'No. Have you joined the Spanish Inquisition?'
'It's not like Jack to disappear, and it's odd it happened on the same afternoon that you arrived.'
'Has anyone told you you have a nasty suspicious streak?
'Only you.' Em scowled.
'He knows when he's beaten.' Connor winked.
'What's that meant to mean?'
Connor shrugged. Em was even more convinced that he was behind this now.
'Perhaps he sensed my alpha male credentials and did a runner.'
'And how would he sense anything about you if you two hadn't met.'
'I didn't say we hadn't met. I said he didn't come round here while you were out.' There was a mischievous expression on his face.
Oh my god! 'Did he come round while I was in the shower?'
'Yep.'
'So you answered the door, dripping wet in a towel. And was that when I shouted for the shower gel?'
Connor just raised his eyebrows, looking pleased with himself.
'That's why you called me 'darling' and offered to wash my back!' Em was enraged. 'What did you say to him?'
'Just hello. He worked the rest out for himself.'
'Take that smug look off your face, you bastard. You think you're so bloody clever. Get out. That's the last time I ever do you a favour. I don't care if you end up sleeping with a dancing wanker. You're not stopping here any fucking longer. Get the fuck out of here.'
'Not so posh now, then.'
She picked up his hold-all and threw it out of the front door.
'Alright, alright, I'm going, you mad bitch.'
Em slammed the door behind him and leaned back on it, wondering how to undo the mess.
Ten seconds later, there was a knock on the door.
Em flung it open. 'What?'
'My phone's on the coffee table.'
'Wait there.' She slammed the door again, marched into the living room and grabbed his phone.
