'I thought there weren't any local gyms in Dashford?'

'I didn't think there were, but apparently, there's a private one near the church. One of his surfer mates hires it out.'

'£5 says he asks you about Australia again.'

'You're on because I'm confident he won't.'

CHAPTER SEVENTY-NINE

Ben leaned against the gym wall, watching Em do press-ups. 'Have you thought any more about Australia?' That was £5 down the pan if she fessed up to Lucy what he'd said.

'I haven't changed my mind. I might do New Zealand one day, but Australia's too hot for me.'

'Or I'm too hot for you,' Ben chuckled.

Em got up and threw her towel at him. 'Vain sod.'

'You can do another ten of those for your cheek,' he laughed. 'I'm going to look at flights next week, so I thought I'd mention it.'

'So soon?' Em would miss Ben, but not enough to go halfway around the world with him.

'I'm not going to go for a few months yet. But I want to get it all booked in.'

'Will you be alright on your own?'

'I'm a big boy now. I'll manage.' He looked serious for a moment. 'Promise me something.'

'What?'

'That you won't stay here on your own.'

'What do you mean? I'm happy here.'

'Life could easily pass you by, living in Dashford. You deserve more fun than that.' He turned and headed towards the weights machine before Em could respond. She followed him.

'You're miles away,' Ben said as he set up the weights.

'I was just thinking about what you said.'

'Just that? You were like it earlier on as well.'

'I keep worrying about the prize giving on Thursday. I'm dreading it.'

'Why? You'll get made a fuss of and potentially win a fancy award that could seriously help you grow your art business. It's a fantastic opportunity.'

'I know. But I hate being the centre of attention.'

'Is that the only reason?'

'No. I don't want to see Jack again.'

'I thought so.' Ben could be perceptive at times. 'I'm sure he'll behave like a perfect gentleman.'

'I'm sure he will. I'm just worried it will stir up old feelings. How would you feel if you had to socialise with Sophie again?'

'The same, I guess.' Ben was quiet for a moment. 'Who's going with you?'

'Lucy and Nancy.'
