I nod, but deep down I know I won’t.

Because even though Ronan holds my whole heart, and I can’t imagine loving anyone the same way I do him, I don’t know if I can trust him.

And not even love is worth dying for.

Not when I have a little life to bring into the world.

CHAPTER SIXTY-TWO

RYKER

NOW

Istretch my sore muscles as soon as I slip out from the back of the SUV.

Normally I would take the passenger seat, needing the extra leg room for my height, but if there’s a chance to sit next to my siren, I’m going to take it every single time.

Ronan opens the trunk and rummages through a bag, throwing items into the back seat that I vaguely recognize as Chloe’s clothes.

If I had it my way, we’d keep her half dressed for the rest of the trip, but she needs to pee, and I’m self-aware enough to know that if she walked into the gas station wearing just an oversized shirt, I’d have to kill one too many innocent bystanders.

It’s not their fault my girl is the most beautiful woman in the world, but I wouldn’t be able to allow them to live after ogling her.

Yeah, it’s definitely better she put some clothes on, even if it takes away my easy access.

I pop the fuel cap and tap my credit card before refilling the tank. It wasn’t empty, but who knows how long we have before they catch up to us.

So far no one has followed us, which we’ve confirmed with Corbin tracking us on traffic cameras, but that doesn’t mean we’re in the clear.

Chloe slips out of the back seat wearing an oversized sweater I’m certain belongs to Ronan and yoga pants that hug her curves, putting sinful thoughts straight into my mind.

Is this what the rest of my life looks like?

A perpetual hard-on because everything about my woman turns me on?

“What?” she asks, a soft blush hitting her cheeks as she looks down at her outfit.

“You’re perfect,” I murmur, lifting my arm to make space for her against me, and she takes it without hesitation, burying her face into my chest.

“Come on, Duchess. We don’t have all day for you to pee and get something to eat,” Damon snaps, but it’s missing its usual bite.

She’s wearing him down even if he hates it, and I can’t help but feel a little smug on her behalf.

Chloe huffs out an irritated sigh and looks up at me through big green eyes.

“I can kill him for you if you want.”

Her laugh fills the space around us, and it’s the most beautiful fucking sound I’ve ever heard in my life. Better than any song ever written or the screams of my victims. Even better than her moans of pleasure, which come in at a very close number two.

“Rain check?” She smiles.

“You got it, Siren. Just say the word, and it’s done.”

“Planning on killing anyone that upsets me?”

“Fuck yeah. Consider me your own personal serial killer.”

She scoffs, shaking her head as if the thought is ridiculous, but that smile stays in place as she presses a kiss to the space over my heart and trails after Damon toward the gas station.
