But now we’re going back to my place, and based on the landmarks we’re passing, it’s coming up

soon. Setting my hands in my lap, I toy with the edges of my shirt, refusing to meet his gaze for the

brief seconds he looks over at me.

“Want to talk about it?” His tone is tight, tense, and all it does is make me feel even more

horrible.

“Are you dead set on going to my apartment?”

“You mean as opposed to you taking a car service or catching a ride with someone else? I’m

pretty set.”

“But, like, you don’t want to come in, right? Like, we’re talking kiss in front of the door, and you

leave?” I detest the high-pitched tone of my voice, but everything in me is bordering on hysterical.

Instead of answering, Master Aiden looks back to the empty road and tightens his grip on the

wheel. My insides churn as his vibe shifts from amiable to upset. I can see it in the set of his

shoulders, the jumping of the muscles at his jaw when he grits his teeth.

Once we’re at a stoplight, he looks over at me again. “Is there something you’re hiding from me?

Do you live with someone? Is that it?”

Shocked, all I can do is laugh in his face. Out of everything that’s wrong with this situation, that’s

not it. For a moment, I catch a glimpse of hurt in his eyes before he masks it with anger. Fuck. This is

the last thing I want.

“Sorry. I’m not laughing at you. Honest. I’m laughing at the situation. I’m not living with anyone.

Truthfully, living with someone would make the rent situation easier, but I’m not sure who would

actually want to live with me.”

The light turns green before he can respond, but the corners of his mouth quirk up just a touch,

letting my heart go back to normal. The last thing I want after such an amazing night is for him to be

upset.
