"Nothing." I almost smiled. "Just... bring her home. Please."

"I will."

His hand found mine on the floor between us. My fingers curled around his and held on tight.

Devon called with a location. Crown Heights, a ground-floor unit in a building Supreme used for holding. Two guards outside, one inside. Nene's phone had pinged from the location three times in the last few hours.

Omar stood up from the floor, pulled me up after him, and held my face in both hands.

"I'll call you when it's done."

"Be careful."

"Always am." He kissed me once, quick and hard, then walked out the door.

I stood in the apartment alone. The voice note was still on my phone. I played it one more time. Nene's voice, steady and wrong.

I'm okay. I'm not hurt. Stay where you are.

I closed my eyes and waited.

Chapter 33

Omar

Devon's contact at the phone company came through in forty minutes. Nene's number had pinged off a cell tower in Crown Heights three times in the last few hours, all from the same location. A ground-floor unit on Sterling Place, a building Supreme's crew had been using for storage and meetings for at least two years. Devon cross-referenced the address with his surveillance data and confirmed it. Two guards outside, rotating in shifts. One inside.

I called Kadeem from the car outside APEX.

"Sterling Place," I told him. "Ground floor. Two outside, one in."

"How many inside with her?"

"Devon's contact says one. But that could change."

"When are you going?"

"Tonight. Me and James. Devon stays with the car."

Kadeem was quiet for a second. "You need more bodies?"

"Three is enough. More than that draws attention."

"Aight." Another pause. "Omar."

"Yeah?"

"Bring her back clean. No mess that leads to us."

"Understood."

I hung up and drove to James's building in Bed-Stuy. He was in his apartment cleaning a weapon at his kitchen table when I knocked. He looked at me, looked at the piece in his hand, and nodded.

"When?" he asked.

"Two hours. You driving or am I?"

"You drive. I'll ride."
