“Nice to meet you?” She turns to the side and extends her hand my way.

I’m not surprised. She looks as much of a suck-up as her mom.

But since she’s so honest with me, I agree that I, at least, will give her the same amount of honesty as she does.

I won’t ruin anything, like my father asked me to.

For now.

I catch her palm in mine, hold onto it, and lean forward. “Madelyn, right?”

“I prefer Maddy.”

She gives me an innocent look, eyes painfully big and brown that I could drown in.

I twist and twist, tightening the grip on her hand.

“Maddy.”

It hurts. I know it hurts.

She swallows and struggles to pull her hand away.

Once she does, she turns the other way, pretending nothing happened.

I mutter under my breath, “The pleasure is all mine, little sister.”

Dusting off imaginary particles off my pants, I turn back to the table, occupying my mind with the new subject of my attention. She doesn’t know it yet, but I’m going to make her life a living hell.

I’m gonna fuck her up so bad, she’ll regret the moment she entered mine.

MADDY

TWO WEEKS LATER - 16 YEARS OLD

I’ve buried myself by the door of my locker, so I don’t have to hear the whispers as he walks through the hallways. Yet, I can’t help but look over my shoulder as he does.

My stepbrother. Kayden A’gosto marches through the school with a confident smirk on his face, in a T-shirt and gray sweatpants, and a light-looking backpack slung over his shoulder.

“New hottie alert?” one of my best friends, Kira, whispers, her eyes glued to Kayden.

Rage bubbles in my chest.

“Dayum,” Jasmin corroborates. She’s my other best friend, and despite hiding behind her glasses and long black hair, she doesn’t hesitate to give her opinion.

How dare he come into my life, and then into my school, and make such a fuss?

I don’t like this one bit.

“What do you think, Maddy?” My friends stare at me as Kayden’s already all the way to the cafeteria.

Other girls ogle him as he walks by. I’m sure they’ll be at his feet.

He thinks he’s so much better than all of us. Like we owe him something.

A guy pats him on the back, and they do a handshake before walking into the cafeteria.
