So then, why was he here? Standing up to Trevor for me, trying to save my job?
I didn’t want him to save me. I just wanted it to be over.
As we reached the next doorway just outside of Principal Rutton’s office, Mia threw her arm across my chest, and stopped me in place.
She pressed her finger to her lips, silently signalling for quiet. She looked like she was afraid of getting caught. It didn’t take long to understand why.
“… ruined everything Shawn and I have been working towards, Trevor.”
Stacey. Her voice was harsh and low, but it was definitely her.
“It’s not my fault he decided to take the blame for Lilly. That’s on Shawn, not on me.”
Whiny and quiet, but unmistakably Trevor. Mia turned to me with wide eyes and flapped her hands before reaching for her phone.
“But if you didn’t forge that invoice in the first place, none of this would’ve happened.”
“I had to. Nothing else worked.”
We pulled our phones out and cringed at each other. Trevor and Stacey weren’t close enough to record. We could barely hear them as it was. Were we too late?
“You should’ve just left Lilly alone and found another job somewhere else.”
“No. She humiliated me, Stacey. She deserves this.”
Stacey made a noise of frustration. “I don’t care that she humiliated you. Do you know what your stupid plan cost us? We were raising money to help kids, Trevor. Kids. Don’t you care about them?”
He scoffed. “Why the fuck would I care?”
Next to me, Mia’s face twisted in disgust.
“Well, what about me? Don’t you care about me? It’s been years, Trevor. Please. Just delete the video. I did what you wanted.”
Trevor sighed heavily. “I’ll delete it, I swear. After this is done. This has to work.”
“What if it doesn’t? What if Rutton gives Lilly her job back and Shawn loses his?”
“Then I’ll just have to keep fucking with her student’s test scores until she gets fired.”
Mia and I swapped an incredulous glance, and I fought the raging inferno that licked my ribs.
That. Fucking. Fucking. Fucking. FUCKING ASSHOLE.
He’s been fucking with my student’s test scores all this fucking time. If Mia didn’t kill him, I sure as shit was going to.
“Wasn’t what you did with the invoice enough?”
“I don’t know. Forging Shawn’s signature and sending it from Lilly’s email should’ve been enough, but if Shawn’s meeting with Rutton works, and she gets her job back, I might have to think of something else.”
“Hey.” Shawn. That was Shawn’s voice. “What the fuck are you doing here?”
Mia and I swapped another glance, fearful this time, as Shawn’s heavy footsteps sounded through the hallway.
“I still work here. Where else would I be?” Trevor snapped, and I could picture the sneer on his face as he spoke.
Mia gripped my arm and we stepped out. Stacey looked at us with surprise, but Trevor and Shawn didn’t pause.
“I’m going to break every one of your bones, you fucking slimy little asshole,” Shawn growled as he closed in, balling his hands into fists as a calculating Trevor watched.
