“Nate—”

“You’re so damn beautiful when you smile, Callie. There isn’t much I wouldn’t do to take your troubles away.”

“Are you trying to turn me into mush?”

“That wasn’t the plan. Is it working?”

She grinned. “Yes.”

The intensity was gone from his stare as he grinned back. “I’ll have to keep that in mind.”

The tension had vanished, but there was still something bothering Nate. “Tell me what’s going on.”

He sighed. “It’s been a long day. Thomas and I had a go-around, and I’m not excited that I have to leave you again.”

Her frown was back. “You and Thomas argued?”

He nodded. “A little. Town stuff.”

“Can you stay for dinner? Maybe we can cook together and talk about it?”

He shook his head regretfully. “Unfortunately, I should head back in a couple of minutes. The ghosts and goblins should be out and about in a little while, but I’ll be home as soon as I can.” He kissed her. “You could wait for me in bed.”

“Okay.”

“And you’ll be wearing your cat ears?”

She laughed as he chuckled. She’d needed this last weekend, but she needed this too—normal, simple nights when her case didn’t get in the way. “I can probably arrange that."

He kissed her again. “Have fun with your work tonight.”

“I will. Stay safe.”

“That’s the plan.” He brushed his lips against hers once more, winked, and stepped back, heading out for an evening of keeping watch over his town.
