Evan nodded. “Unfortunately, that property proved to be more of a liability than a benefit to our wallets.”

“The Fourth of July 1995—you were at the family party that night?”

“Just like always.” Evan yawned. “Let me tell you I’m ready for hot summer days again—maybe a beer and a dog by the water.”

“Sounds good.” Evan was starting to look even more tired than when Nate got there. “You know what? I should get back and pick up my shift. Mac and Denny are probably ready to go home.”

“Thanks for stopping by, Nate.” Evan stood and gave Nate a hug. “Hopefully next time you’re in town we can grab a drink on me.”

It worried him that Evan didn’t seem quite as bulky under his large sweatshirt. “I’m counting on that. You take care of yourself. Let me know how the tests come out—if there’s anything I can do.”

“Of course.” He sat down. “Tell everyone I say hello. I’m sorry I missed Callie’s show. Lily’s still talking about her anniversary present. And we’ve got the new piece in the hallway.”

“I’ll be sure to say hi.” He walked to the door, twisting the doorknob.

“Hey, good luck with the case. If anyone can figure things out, I have no doubt it’s you. I’m sure it’s only a matter of time.”

“I appreciate the vote of confidence. I sure as hell feel like I’m spinning my wheels.”

“You come from good stock. Your dad was a hell of a sheriff. From what I’ve seen, you are too.”

“Thanks. Get better.” He hurried downstairs and found Lily sitting in the study with a pale pink quilt and a needle and thread in her lap.

“Kayla’s about ready to pop. I still can’t believe we’ve got our first grandbaby coming next month.” She smiled. “A little girl just like Gwen.”

“That’s awesome.” He cleared his throat. “You’ll keep me updated on Evan—let me know how he’s doing?”

“We sure will. The doctor mentioned something about some sort of parasite. I’ll tell you that man’s finished with all of the traveling—even if he doesn’t know it yet.”

“Good idea. I’ll let you get back to your blanket. I need to hit the road.”

Lily hugged him and walked him to the door. “You come back anytime, now.”

“Don’t be a stranger on the island.”

“We’re coming on Saturday morning—a little early for the holiday. I want to have plenty of time to give Leah and Mini a hand with preparations.”

“I can’t wait to see you.”

“I’m hoping being home and the brisk sea air will be good for Evan. You and Callie should come over for dinner Saturday night. We’ll have Molly and Gwen too. We can make an evening of it before everyone starts arriving and things get busy.”

He nodded. “Let me check with Callie, but I’m sure you can count us in.”

“I’ll see you then.” She kissed his cheek. “Bye, sweetie.”

“Bye.” He hustled to the truck and got in. He didn’t have any more answers than he’d had when he drove into the city, but at least he wasn’t at a dead end. The basketball game and date night with Callie had kept him from Silas Tillerson’s old boot box, but as soon as the ferry docked later this afternoon, Nate planned to see what was what.
