Thomas gave Nate a nod and extended the shelter of his umbrella. “Nathan.”

“Thanks.” Nate locked up and shut his door.

“This is quite a shower we’re having.”

Nate nodded. “The clouds have been building for a while.”

“For most of the morning.” They started walking toward the station. “Have you talked to my son lately?”

“I haven’t heard from Brad for a couple of weeks. Rumor has it saving lives keeps a man busy.”

Thomas grinned, the pride in his perfect smile unmistakable. Brad had busted his ass to become the doctor his father had demanded he be—whether it’s what Brad had wanted or not. “That’s what I hear.”

“How’s Leah?” Nate asked, wanting a change of subject. Discussing Brad with Thomas always seemed to piss Nate off.

“She’s off to Boston for a couple of days—left early this morning. Her sister’s having a thyroid biopsy tomorrow. I know she’s hoping to catch up with Brad for lunch while she’s in town.”

“I hope everything turns out okay.”

“Our fingers are crossed.” Thomas stopped outside the door. “Fanny called with the final numbers for this year’s Fall Festival. Looks like we had a solid turnout.”

Nate nodded. “Seems like we did.”

“I think last weekend’s Boston Globe feature gave us a little extra edge.”

And that’s what life was all about for Mayor Thomas Sanderson: his love affair with the town of Sanderson, his family’s prominence, and the almighty tourist dollar. For as long as Nate could remember, he’d disliked Thomas as much as he’d loved him. Out of the four Sanderson brothers, Thomas was his least favorite, always preferring Matthew the most. “I think people had fun.”

“That’s what we always hope for.” Thomas switched the umbrella to his opposite hand. “So, I’ve heard Callie Davis is on the island—that you two have been spending some time together.”

Nate rubbed at the back of his neck, already knowing he didn’t like where this was going. “She’s here on vacation.”

“I walked through her JFK terminal last month. Breathtaking. Ms. Davis is a very talented woman.”

Nate nodded. “She is.”

“Her art seems to cause quite a stir—brings in quite a draw.”

“It does. All over the world, but that’s not why she’s here,” Nate said, shutting down any ideas Thomas might be tossing around in his head.

“Nathan—”

“Callie likes her privacy.”

Thomas nodded before he glanced at his watch. “Make sure you tell your parents hello the next time you give them a call.”

“I will.” Nate turned the doorknob as Thomas walked away, certain that Sanderson’s mayor had gotten the hint to leave Callie alone.
