She licks her bottom lip and then bites down. “Yes.” She draws out the word.

He looks at her now, searching her eyes. “I want you to know me.”

The thought touches her, and before she can say anything else, he continues painting while rattling off more things about himself. She listens intently, storing what he tells her into this new pocket of her brain that belongs solely, and surprisingly, to him.

She opens her mouth to ask him another question, but her phone rings in her pocket. She grabs it, knowing exactly who it is.

“Dillon?” he asks. He flexes his jaw once.

She nods, and he holds out a hand. “Here,” he says.

Reluctantly, she passes the phone over, unsure if this is a good idea. To her, she was just going to ignore him until he went away, but as Logan implied before, that may not happen.

“This is Logan Brook,” Logan says when he answers. Eme crosses her arms, uncomfortable, as Logan turns to the trees for the conversation.

A moment of silence passes, but Eme can hear Dillon’s side of the conversation well. “Where’s Eme?”

“She’s busy. Is there something I can do for you, Mr. Skyler?”

She hears Dillon growl. “Tell her to call me back.”

“I will do no such thing,” Logan says coolly.

“You will -”

“No, I won’t.” Logan turns back to Eme, giving her a look that questions whether what he’s going to say next is okay. Somehow, Eme knows what he’s going to say, and nods her head. “She doesn’t wish to talk to you, and I stand by her decisions.”

“You bastard. She was meant to be my mate. Mine!”

“And now she’s mine.” Logan’s eyes flash to anger, to possession. Eme’s heart skips a beat, not out of fear but of . . . something else. Pride, perhaps. “Back off, or you’ll deal with me.”

The line goes dead as Dillon hangs up on the Head Alpha. Logan passes back the phone. “Was that okay?”

Eme releases a shaky breath. “Thank you.”

He reaches over and brushes her cheek with his thumb. “My pleasure. Maybe now he’ll leave you alone.”
