“He’s being modest,” Logan grumbles. “Unusual for you.”
Wayne gestures with his hand. “He’s the Head Enforcer.”
Draven is a taller man with a sun-kissed skin pallor. Eme smiles at him, somehow knowing they’re going to get along. She takes his hand and shakes it, Head Enforcer or not.
From her last pack, she knows that enforcers are ruthless. They take care of the pack’s business, usually by brute force. To be labeled as the Head Enforcer of such a large pack must be an honor or a great burden, she isn’t sure which.
“What are you doing with my things?” she asks him when he grabs a suitcase from the trunk.
He frowns at her, “Do you plan to live in your car?”
“Knowing her, she probably thinks she’s a prisoner,” Logan says.
She whips back around. “I do not.”
“Mhmm,” he says with humor in his tone.
Eme turns back to Draven then to Wayne. “Do either of you two have mates?”
“Oh gosh, no,” Logan says for them. “Most of the pack has imprinted with another, and there’s only one true mate. That’s Viola and Jim. They live in that house there.” He points to one of the cabins.
“Only one true mated pair?” Eme loses hope quickly.
He nods. “Only one.”
Draven sets the luggage down. “They’re good people.”
Her old pack didn’t have any true mates, and she’s sure that Viola and Jim are cherished here, especially by the way Draven’s tone sounds when he talks about them. It warms her heart, and she makes a mental note to meet them sometime even if that means knocking on their door.
“Come on, I’ll take you inside,” Draven says, lugging her luggage along and leading the way.
Logan watches them head inside and huffs. Mist billows out of his nose. She warms to Draven but not to him? The thought stirs a bout of jealousy inside him, and he works to keep it at bay.
Wayne shifts his weight. He knows exactly why Wayne still stands next to him instead of checking on the pack like he normally would when they are gone overnight.
“There’s no bite mark,” Wayne comments softly.
“She wouldn’t let me.”
“Logan . . .”
“I know.”
“You have to mate to keep up the alliance. You need the Stonewell Pack’s support if we are to stave off the rogues.”
“They haven’t tried anything in weeks.” Logan turns toward him.
Wayne crosses his arms. “They haven’t yet. But their numbers are growing by the day, and all of them want to see you gone. Let’s not even mention the rumors of wolfcalm. It’s only a matter of time before any one of them tries to seat their own on your throne.”
“My throne?”
Wayne waves a hand. “You know what I mean. Our patrolling wolves say that they’re getting closer to our territory every day. That spells trouble, especially if they’re taking the drug themselves.”
Taking this drug is illegal. Not only does it eventually turn a shifter feral, but it has been known to give the shifter an increased strength.
Logan sighs. “Add more to the patrol. Keep an eye on the matter, will ya? Both matters.”
At this moment, he’s thankful for Wayne and all he does for the pack. His mind is in places other than the pack’s safety, and he doesn’t know what to make of it.
Eme. Eme is the problem and a problem he plans to fix.
