“I met someone at a bar.” Eme snorts, and Wayne frowns at the dismissive noise. “What? I went there for coffee, okay? We happened to be chatting, and he told me a few things.”

“What else did this rogue tell you?” Logan asks. Wayne hadn’t told him that it was a rogue, but his alpha is smart and can put two and two together.

“He couldn’t tell me much about wolfcalm. And believe me, I asked. But he said he didn’t know anything.”

“Then what did he know?” Logan asks.

“Well,” Wayne says, scrubbing his palms on his jeans and leaning back into his seat’s backrest. “He warned me to stay away from the city.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know. He told me that during the night is when they’re most active.”

They’re silent for a moment, processing what Wayne said.

“So, what do we do?” Eme asks.

“We’re going to give it a few days.”

“A few days?” Wayne stands up.

Logan looks up at him, crossing his arms over his chest. An alpha doesn’t need to stand to be superior, and under the weight of his stare, Wayne looks away. “By now, everyone will know a Brook Mountain Beta was sniffing around a bar. We will give it a few days, let your name disappear, and then send you back in.”

“Who will I go with?” Because Wayne knows he can’t go alone.

“I’ll send Draven with you. And Becca. She’s from the city. She can help guide you.”

“You don’t think that’ll cause a problem?” Draven is a good head enforcer, but he can get sidetracked when put into the sort of situations involving city life. And Becca? She’ll be a distraction.

“Oh, there’s a problem,” Eme hisses. Logan says her name in warning.

“What’s the problem?”

Logan sighs. “That’s something I’m sure you’ll find out yourself.”

“You fucked up,” Eme says before Logan can stop her.

Wayne looks between her and his alpha. “Okay, seriously. What did I do last night that has everyone pissed off?”

Eme snarls, and her nose crinkles as though she’s upset. “Ask Val.”

Wayne pinches the bridge of his nose, wondering, yet again, if he even wants to know. Whatever he did was enough to piss off both girls and to cause strain on his Head Alpha and his mate’s relationship. It’s the last thing he wanted, but if it has to do with Val, perhaps she will tell him. His answers probably aren’t here because, by the way Eme is looking at him . . . Jesus, what did he do?

“Ignore her,” Logan grumbles. “Look, are you coming to the meal tonight? I’d like to bring Draven in on this.”

Wayne scrubs the back of his head. “Yeah. Who’s cooking?”

“Val,” Eme says with a wicked grin on her face.
