Sammi snarls but stops resisting. Wayne tosses her onto the couch. “Search the place,” he tells Draven. Draven only stares at Sammi.
“What the hell is wrong with you?” Wayne asks after checking out his bite marks.
Draven runs a hand down his face, snapping from whatever had given him pause over the last several minutes. “She’s my fated mate.”
Sammi looks over at him. They stare at one another for a moment. Sammi’s lips part, and Draven stares at her with adoration in his eyes.
“Jesus fucking Christ,” Wayne says, a hand going through his hair. This is exactly what they need. “Fine. I’ll search the place, and you watch over her. I swear to god, if you start fucking her, I will bite off your left ear.”
“You want me to just stand there?” Wayne knows that not touching her will be the most difficult thing he’s ever done in his life, but right now is not the time. Surely Draven knows this somewhere deep in his subconscious.
“Yes,” Wayne snarls. “Don’t let her leave.”
Without another word, Draven goes to stand before Sammi, and Wayne lets out a breath. Becca, who had been silently watching this entire time, helps Wayne search Sammi’s belongings.
“How long have you lived here?” Draven asks Sammi.
“Ever since my parents kicked me out of their pack.”
“Why did they kick you out?”
Wayne looks over at her long enough to see her shoulders barely lift in a shrug. “Because I couldn’t follow orders.”
“Were they the alphas?”
“Yes. What about you? Who are you to the Brook Mountain Pack?”
“The head enforcer.”
She mock-bows while still sitting on the couch. “Oooh, big shot.”
Wayne frowns, opens a cabinet, and pauses. There, nestled between books, is exactly what he’s looking for. He picks up a package of wolfcalm pills. “So Jesse was right,” he proclaims to the room. He turns to face the others and holds them up.
“I can’t believe you ratted me out,” Sammi growls at Jesse.
“They’re here to help, Sammi. They want to make the town better.”
Sammi throws up her hands. “So says them.”
“It’s true,” Draven whispers to her, and somehow, that whisper captures more of her attention than Wayne’s planned yelling.
“I barely know you,” she says to Draven. “How do I know you’re not lying?”
Draven studies her for a moment. “Do you think it’s common that one fated mate lies to the other?”
She crosses her arms but doesn’t deny it. “Are you going to punish me?”
He shakes his head. “No.”
“You don’t know that,” Wayne tells him, jiggling the bag again as a reminder. “It’s up to Logan.”
“No one touches her,” Draven growls in a low tone. Wayne blinks at him. He’s never talked to his beta like that before.
Wayne scrubs his face with his empty hand. This is going to be a mess.
A phone begins to ring, and it takes a moment for Wayne to realize that it’s his. He pulls it from his back pocket and looks at the screen, noting quickly that it’s Logan.
“We’re still working on the drug thing,” Wayne immediately says.
