For a split second, I was sure I’d screwed up. That he wouldn’t answer the call and I’d be left kneeling before Ares as his punishment came.

But if Morrigan—the ancient warrior goddess of the Celts—could walk among us, then why couldn’t Ares’s Roman counterpart?

The one strong enough to balance the scales between them and match him on the battlefield.

The floor beneath us fractured as the wolves of war brayed their arrival, and from the smoke rose a Roman soldier wearing an ancient galea upon his head and wool tunic around his muscled frame. Solid gray eyes stared past his straight nose, watching me as he rose to a monstrous height.

Mars drew his sword from the hilt.

I lunged for my rifle.

Ares roared his battle cry.

Somebody do something. My beast snarled and thrashed, ready to tear through my skin if it meant finding her mate.

“That gun.” I pointed at the big weapon attached to the top of the vehicle. “Does it work?”

“The .50 Cal?” Marcus asked.

One of the younger men leaned over to whisper to the man next to him. “I think she wants to shoot the sky.”

“Well, we need to do something!” I growled.

The men shrank onto the bench seats in the back of the vehicle, and Katrina gave me an exasperated look as Charles pointed in my direction.

“Look, Mommy. Grrr.” He showed his teeth.

Right. I bit down on my fangs, realizing I had to play nice if I expected them to let me shoot the big gun at the…

Screw it.

I wanted to shoot the sky.

With tears burning my eyes, I turned back to study the horizon where a giant god-sized fist had taken my mate. I had to save him.

But how?

Was this how humans felt all the time? This powerless and blind? I couldn’t track his scent. Couldn’t see where he’d gone. All I felt was the tug in my chest, our mate bond still there despite the distance of wherever he’d been taken to.

I’d tear this city apart until I found him.

The men in the back of the vehicle were calling on the radio, asking if anyone had seen any strange unidentified flying objects, and possibly the lieutenant with them, as I stood outside in the rain, rubbing the ache in my chest.

Lightning flashed across the sky, cracking the night into fractures, but that wasn’t what caught my attention.

I peered through the darkness, watching as a building lit up in the distance. Just a flash and it all went black again, but somehow… I knew.

Crow wings blocked my field of vision.

“I’m getting really tired of you disobeying me, alpha.” Morrigan’s voice echoed from the crow.

I batted her away, seeing the outline of ghostly shapes that floated behind her. A Viking woman with a giant sword and an Egyptian beauty wearing a red deshret and carrying a bow both glared at me.

“Who are they?” I grabbed the door of the military vehicle, seriously thinking about that big gun.
